Kicker question

Post by Kenny Fulton »

I'm looking for any solutions to a MAJOR problem. I picked up a real dandy young mule a while back and he's coming along real nice but the rascal will sure kick or stomp the snot out of a hound if he gets a chance. I've always believed it was easier to get a good mule than a good hound but I sure like this mule and would like keep him If I could get him over the Martial Arts habit. :x .
Thanks for you input,
Kenny

I wonder how well strapping him up with Dr Lightning (shock collar) would work for this? Might be worth a try... but you'll probably have to use a dummy collar on him alot. I've used them for stupid crap that my horses do.

Kicking

Post by Bdog »

First I'm no mule trainer and only have two mules so take this for just what it is something that worked for me:

When I got my young John mule he didnt want a dog around him or in his pen. I started with one of my older curs that has some sense and could get out of his way and with a rope halter on when my mule would chase after the dog I would grunt at him catch him put a lead rope on him and lunge him until he was lathered up.

This is not a fast cure but only let one dog out and I repeated this process about six times and increased the length of time and speek as I lunged him.

Now, the dogs and mules roam together and I feed with the dogs in the same area. After a long ride and a dog gets in his way he will pin his ears back and I grunt at him spin him until I want to throw up. This seldom happens anymore and after a few sessions he will just nose them to get out of the way.

Again I don't know crap about training mules but I liked this mule a bunch and he worked through this but as most will tell you that a mule may never get over it and one day may kill your best hound but mine is worth the chance for me.

There is some true mule skinners on here that will have a better solution I'm sure, just my own experience...

If he was mine I'd tie up a hind foot on him in the corral and turn every dog I had loose in there with him and let him fight that foot rope tryin to kick one. I'd be right there to give him motivation not to do it as well, size 10.5 :!: If you don't know your way around that stuff, sell him and get something that will not hurt you or your dogs
