NEW SPORT DOG TEK REVIEW BY STEVE SNELL

Post by Mike Leonard »

Thought some of you might like to read this review of a new product that might offer some competition to Garmin. This unit features GPS Tracking and a E- collar all in one unit and can be set up for as many as 12 dogs. It's brand new but an interesting concept.

Very interesting concept indeed. It seems like modern electronics are like the weather, if you don't like it, just wait and it will change!

I did not see what the range was on the ecollar?

He's Definately a salesman writing a review..

There looks like there are a couple big Issues that I see that he doesn't seam to care about, or at least he tries to spin it and turn them into a Positive.

No track history.. That's horrible. If you loose a dog or a dog get's out of range, you can get an idea of what direction he was going or what crap hole he trailed into before You lost communication.

Like i mentioned earlier another Huge hole is No ability for terrain or maps, You wouldn't know if your dog was sitting on the Hwy or not..

2.5 Second Updates for a 25 hour battery life.. ( I do like the idea that it automatically adjusts the Updates the longer.. But starting at 2.5 seconds?? Man I would think 5 or 10 seconds is plenty of Update rate for me... I keep mine set to 30 seconds all the time for the longest battery possible)

I didn't read if you could have 12 track and train collars so essentially having 12 shock collars, but that's allot of Money to equipt a 12 dog system at $359 each.

Thinking about it.... I think one benifit might be if they don't interfer with the Garmin Frequency's and you are in an area where allot of people have the garmin's and you get those annoying Interference messages... If not many people buy these Sport dogs, you might not have to deal with the Interfering messages.. (That might be worth something) Even though you would loose some nice features.

I don't know the more I read about this the more I think it's pretty much going to be sub par...

In my opinion They really could have done some good things with this and gave some competition to Garmin.. But I think they dropped the ball.

The price doesn't look any better than buying a Tracking collar and a Shock collar.. They are going to be

$359.95 for each additional Shock and track collar.. holy crap!!

$199 + 130 is $330 dollars for a Tri Tronics and Garmin collar..( and that's using 199 for a collar price, You can find the garmin collars for less than that..(I sell them for less!)

I kinda have to laugh About Steve Snell's Review's They have allot of hot air and they always seam to come out with the Positives so he can sell allot of them. Someone needs to Tell Sport dog they missed the mark. This might have been good before Garmin, but it's not going to cut it after Garmin.

I have one on order, After reading this I don't konw that I even want to pay for one to Test and try out.. I'm just not sure If I'll be able to sell it with a straight face..

Maybe I'm just missing the mark here.

http://www.gundogsupply.com/compare-spo ... astro.html

Here is a comparison He did of a side by side of his garmin Astro and the SportDog unit, It's a better read and side by side comparision.

Unless I'm totally wrong I haven't gotten to see one first hand so I don't know, but everything I read just sounds like it's going to be an expensive lesson for SportDog.

I think Our last hope is for Marshall to get it right and get Garmin's attension and give some competition.

what about tinyloc. I am more interested in these set ups. I believe they claim to have the farthest gps range on the market with 12 miles and there collars have an additional telemetry back up built into them.

a friend of mine was at cabelas a few months ago picking up a astro/dc40 and a guy was at the store promoting the sportdog. sounded like this guy was testing the sportdog but on bird dogs not hounds. i hope the competition helps garmin and whoever else makes gps units come down in price but hard to go wrong with a garmin/tritonics combo in my opinion. all i know sure nice hunting with gps!!!

my personel opinion is that garmin could of asked alot more than they did for the tecnology were using ,but they kept it affordable.to date it is still unrivaled .i had over two grand into my beep beep system. i have about nine hundred into my garmin system .most state of the art technologies start out way higher than what garmin did.i had to save for awhile to get a garmin ,but it is money well spent. they also kick butt in the commercial fishing industry that im a part of.there is always room for improvement my money is on garmin to come up with it though.jmo.

BuddyW,
Since you probably have Garmin's ear better than the rest of us, you should ask them why they don't go with a decent battery on their collars. They could easily power their collars with a 16000 hour power source that is common on telemetry collars. Having to worry about batteries going dead is not something you should deal with when you turn your hounds into some roadless Hell hole. Sportdog is no better with their setup either. I am just surprised that if they are going to build the most technologically advanced system out there, why would they use a battery that is so inferior to the telemetry batteries of 20+ years ago.

I saw the ad for the new Sport Dog units in this past issue of Full Cry. If it worked really well, I'd really like to have one, however a couple years ago I bought a sportdog e-collar unit with a beeper, I've had numerous incidents when I've been only 50-100 feet away from my dogs and I've tried to shock them with no results. It seems to be really sporadic in its communication between the transmitter and the collar. Has any one else had this problem and if so have you found a remedy ? I've gone back to my old tri-tronics.
Anyway the point is, if my experience with the shock unit is any indication of the reliability of this new tracker/shocker combo, I know I'd be sorely dissappointed.
