Question For You Coyote Hunters

Post by hawkeye23 »

How many of you guys start your pups on fox before introducing them to coyotes? I ve got an 11month old running walker that i started on fox this past weekend and to say the least i ws quite shocked at how well he ran. Im new to this sport of hunting and i ve been getting several pointers from the guys i hunt with but i am curious if you guys start your pups on fox and then later introduce them to coyotes and if so how soon after they start running fox?

i almost always start my pups on fox only reason being the fox pen is a lot closer than the coyote pen, but if the season is open ill put them right on coyotes, i have had real good luck with this, then there the guys that dont want their hounds to run fox!!!

I start out on fox, and will run fox quite often with my older dogs. Fox are great running and teaches the dogs to hunt with the head down at times.

One reason i am asking this question is because several guys have told me to hold off on coyotes until they are started on fox out of fear of a coyote turning on them and ruining them. Idk if any of you have every heard of or had this problem before. The only experience i ve ever had running dogs were beagles when i was a kid but after watching my pup run and have absolutely no quit in him whatsoever i was quite impressed.
