Dogs and range

Post by JasonDunn »

How far do you like your dogs to range? Mine are medium and it works for me especially on small blocks. But I wish I had one long ranged dog that would get deep when the hogs are hard to locate.

I like all my dogs to be long range. I use Plotts to track hunt with and Curs to free cast at night.

I'm more of a long range kind of guy myself. I don't like to have to find the hogs for the dogs. I like for them to do the hunting, but it's not a bad idea to have one that will stick a little closer.

I think whats most important is dogs that find hogs, no matter the range. Theres a lot of long range dogs out there that can't find the hogs and pass them up when going deep. To me whats even better than a long range dog is a rig dog. A rig dog stays fresh and you drive around until he gets a scent and then off he goes. Long range dogs and road dogs wear out quick especially in the heat. Cast dogs are fine but they need to be able to go to the hogs easily every time. If you hunt and see fresh tracks or sign you need a dog that will put a hog at the end of it and work out where they are. People give to much conversation to range, when really what they want is a dog that will just go find a hog.
