i have a plott pup that is really coming along but if my other dog isnt striking enough (cold trailing) she will come back to me she will get on the trail but doesnt have enough interest to keep it going for very long one of my buddies has the same problem shound i find a shock collar and shock her when she comes back or what cause she is hell on caged critters and if she can see them she wont loose interest and will go all day

How old is your pup? On cold trails it is common for a pup not to stay. As far as cage critters I feel that that means very little, in fact I don't want a pup that goes crazy at a cage. Just my opinion. Dewey

Don't put the pup on cold tracks right now. Put him in on hot strikes or wait until the track warms up or is jumped. I like a pup who is interested in a captive training tool, but it has nothing to do with trailing or treeing or hunting. It is just a measure of enthusiasm to me.
Shocking the pup would be the best way to ruin it. How is the pup supposed to understand what it is getting shocked for?

It depends on what type trail dog you want. If you want one that will run a hard track then it had better leartn better learn a old track leads to game if trailed long and hard enough if you want a hound to Run new tracks or hot tracks or to turn in on races let it think there's no work involved

Cobalts right throw her in on jumps. If shes a smart pup it will come together. Rember smart pups are like wine only gets better with AGE.

You didn't say how old your pup was or how much experience he has had. But if he is just starting, it is natural for a pup to come back to you if it is a cold trail, just as Mr. Dewey said. A pup isn't going to be able to smell a cold track at this stage of his life and because of this he is loosing interest and coming back to you.

Just keep putting him down with the old dogs, whenever the old dogs cross a road or you can cut the old dogs trail as they are trailing, try to get the pup back to them. He will start staying longer and longer with the old dogs as time goes on. Then when the old dogs jump and the pup is with them he'll start learning what is on the end of the trail and putting things together.

But at this stage the pup wouldn't have a clue why he was being shocked. I wouldn't do that, if he was mine. I would just give him a little more time, he'll figure it out. Just my thoughts. Good luck with the pup.
