Last time I bought ammo from Randy Garrett was over 5 years ago and at that time he was living near my sister-in-law in Chehalis WA.I used to have her pick it up for me.Just do a search on Garrett Cartridges and his website will come up.I noticed that his prices have gone up ALOT since the last time I bought ammo from him.

when I first started hunting (12 years old and 70 lbs) I used a 45-70 for the first 3 years.It was my dad's gun he uses it now for deer with 300 gr nosler partition made by federal cartridge company they are alittle more money but a person usually doesn't shoot it that many times a year.I beleive this round was the army's sharp shooter caliber for alot of years so it will reach out and touch things if you want it to.

Well I have to agree with you boys it is a nice gun and I am glad I bought it. We killed 2 cougars last week with it and a red fox and it does a number on them :wink:

Van Johnson usees the same gun on bear nad he loves it, so I quess a guy cant go wrong there.

Im a fanatic for them .45/70's, I got the blued marlin guide gun and the Marlin Cowboy which has a 24" barrel and 9rd magazine. Also have a Reproduction Sharps in .45-90.
I use my guide gun for hunting deer, cougar, bear, elk, rabbit. Great gun vry accurate even with iron sights, and it packs well in the brush, which is where i do all my hunting.
Theres a feller in alaska and also one in Iowa that redoes the Marlins for a heavy load the .50 Alaskan, which would be alright to shoot if it didnt cost $70 a box for shells.
For my .45-70 I used factory ammo, and Big Bore, along with the LeverRevolution rounds (1 treasured box, lol), and Hunting Shack. I tend to go for the larger bullets such as the 400grainers. I'll swear by my 405gr Jacketed Flat-nose, that thing rips through both tree and critter like they're butter.

I hunt hogs and bear and a 30/30 is a great all around gun, but I shoot a .444 marlin and I tell you what it stops all forward momentom, from the biggest boar hog to a griz( I've never shot a griz but I know it would). I hand loaded some 345gr jacketed tungston core bondes for it and they are show stopers. 345 total weight but after the lead hollow point expands there is 150grs of tungston that just keeps on plowin through( heavy bone and all) And to answer the question about recoil its not much more then a 30/30. Both the 45/70 &.444 marlins are alaround rifles. but with that being said the 30/30 has killed more game in america and elewere then any other cartridge made, so I think it mighty fine to.
