Is it to hot to run bears in utah?
I HAVE HAD 2 PEOPLE TELL ME ITS TO HOT, WHATS YOUR THOUGHTS?
Re: Is it to hot to run bears in utah?
I'm not a great bear hunter, but I'm still poundin it. things I have noticed is the big bears are starting to stay shaded up alot and not crossing alot of roads. all of my rigs this passed weekend were small runnin bears and the dogs expire before they even got them jumped. The reason for that, I think alot of bears are moving right at first dark, then if you don't rig them till 8 or 9 the next morning you are way too far behind them. one good thing about this heat is when the bear is jumped he don't go to far! I think until it cools down I'm only turning out on hot rigs. I'm also trying to run alot of water canyons so if the dogs overheat they can just lay down in the creek. heard alot of horror stories of guys burning dogs up on summer bear chases. jmo

It's certainly hot but not too hot. The DWR did us a favor a few years ago and allowed us to start hunting earlier in the morning. Just take advantage of that early start and you will most likely be fine. That being said, there is always the possability of stroking a dog out. I did it last summer..... In that event, find some water ASAP and dunk them then be patient. Most of the time they will come out of it just fine.
If your not hunting this summer pursuit season your missing out on a LOT of fun!
JMO.

I think it also depends on what type of shape your dogs are in. If they are not in good shape to be running, i.e. they have been sitting for a while, they might have a bigger chance of over heating and getting heat stroke.

Our summer pursuit sucked this year...10 days and one treed bear (with 3 cubs) that was also caught in the Spring pursuit! I thought the Utah training season closed last Thursday? Or does it depend on the area??

Bears always bed beside the rivers, lakes and swamps when its hot especially in steeper country as there is almost always a cooler breeze (which makes for good rigging)
Longest bear race for me up here to date, 19KM, yeah km and no tree, had to pull them, they were bagged. Bears are phenomenal athletes and bar none the best game to get your dogs into shape.
