Branding Irons

Post by zachvu »

Looking at getting a branding iron made for both the dogs and the horses, how big can I reasonably go to be able to fit onto the ear? I've already the process and everything, just need to know how big I can go! (dogs are out huntin with the inlaws or else I'd go measure their ears) Does 3" tall x 2.5" wide sound reasonable??

It really depends on the size of the dog but I use a 3x2.5 but I like the larger Brands and I use 1/2 inch letters I got mine from L&H Branding Irons. I only do freeze brands and I have found that the alcohol works better than the acetone, just for the fact it gets colder but the pure Alcohol is hard to find in a 90% plus for anymore. Make sure you get the ear clean, dont leave any oils or dirt in branding area it will surely show if you do.

I'm getting mine done by Wes Baker at Pittsburg Foundry. He has good prices, makes deals if you get more than one (like a smaller one for tack, vinyl decals, etc) and will send you a pdf version of the cad file used to mill them. He also completely guarantees satisfaction on all of his work. Seems like a real good guy so far!

I had an iron made by Pitsburg and it is awsome! Mine is 2.5 x 2.5 and looks good on an ear. they had a draft of the brand back to me the day after I contacted them.

Mine's just a little bigger so we can do our horses too and it was $85 with shipping I believe? Same situation with me, a draft of the brand right away, and it was shipped out yesterday so they have a very fast turn time. I'll post a few photos when it arrives / gets used!
