hi everone my name is jonathan i am from manchester ky and new to coyote hunting. i have heard that a lot of people use grayhound at catch dogs but i live in the hills and heard grayhound only work in open lande. so does anyone know a good catch dog for the hills. also sinc coyot hunting kind of a new things here what kind of hounds does everone use. i am thinke about a bluetick or a redbone dose anyone use them any info would be grate. thinks

if your looking to catch, you might want to try some strain of running walker. i will say that the terrain you`ll be hunting will make it alot tougher to catch yotes on a consistant level. you might think about shooting some in front of the hounds. this is just my opinion.

I dont use my dogs on coyotes anymore just bear/cat. But we use Treeing walkers with just a touch of running walker in em for added speed. I think your best bet would be running walkers, there are a lot of strains of them out there and thery're a dime a dozen.

KC uses redbones.. If you want to buy a dog that will start and catch its own coyote it will typically be fairly expensive.. I would have to assume that the snow in the winter is fairly light so you would definitely need spped if you want to actually catch. Typically running walkers (foxhounds). Although there are some tree dogs that can catch on bare ground, alot also depends on how many dogs you'll have and how often you can switch them out while running to keep them fresher and wear the coyote down.. For example remote big country has fewer opportunities to cut in fresh dogs and pick up tired ones, so you would need more speed and stamina to catch.. Where if you have more roads and smaller blocks you may be able to get away with less speed.. Good luck with whatever you choose.. Its quite an addiction once you get into it...

Its not expensive at all to buy a running walker that will start and catch its own yote. running walkers are cheap, well atleast here in Michigan they are. And quite honestly I wouldnt pay over 500 for a coyote hound, just for that reason. Now getting into some of the other game yeah, coyotes no.

Good luck Jonathan on choosing a dog. I wouldnt worry about catching them all, its just as good of a time to shotgun em in front of the dogs!

There's a guy in CA that breeds Scottish deerhounds for runnin yotes, they're supposed to be good dogs but I've never hunted with one.

A little off topic. How can you tell if your young dogs will kill a coyote or can they be taught. I have two young ones that have never faced a live coyote up close. It is in there blood, but shooting is usually the best method around here because coyotes will go into peoples garages or barns, under decks etc. If this happens and the people are home it can make the paper. Bad news! literally.

deerhounds are show dogs, you'll cull quite a few before you find one that catches & kill coyote consistantly. better off going w/ stags if you want to use fast dogs, but they aren't well suited to the area he is in.

There's a guy in iowa that's selling all his coyote dogs, I think he has 8 left. He has finished ones from 200-400 and started ones for 150 I think.

I started last yr with the ruing stock and I am going to all redbones in the next yr.Running dogs don't seem to have the grit needed to hold mean yotes( IMO) at least not what i want them to do.I'm thinking about 1 running dog to wear the yote down then turning loose the redbones.Good luck in what ever breed you go with just be warned it is very addictive

you need better running dogs then. i know there are running dogs that will flat kill a coyote.

Yes Pops is right i know a guy with running walkers that all he does is let the dogs kill the coyotes. They make short work of a coyote in the right situation. They will get about 60 to 70 in the winter which is on the high side of the average for this area. Compared to my dogs and other guys running walkers around, his are big dogs.

I run foxhounds, and they run to catch but I dont shoot I am in it to watch my dogs work I firmly believe a dog should finish what it starts.They wont catch them all but more then not.they wont kill them all but more then not. The fox hound is a great endurance breed but a little tougher to get the gritt- but it can be done.If you want to catch your game you cant shoot every yote you see- but you might not get the numbers of the shooter groups.Considering your terrain you dont want the site hounds and your tree dogs might not have the speed your looking for. But a good running dog of any breed is a joy to watch.GOOD LUCK

There's always running dogs for sale on this site and people who use it seem very friendly and helpful, they're also mostly in the midwest as well.

Get you a open mouth mnt. cur dog you will have all you need to kill the yotes. and your dog wont end up in virginia before to get a shoot .
