Unless you can get onto private property access on public lands around there is pretty limited, mainly foot travel, also watch out for 'Open Space' areas as you can't hunt on them. Bring some Tecnu...they have an some truly awesome poison oak there, Los Padres special as we used to call it. There are lots of hippies in the woods too. All that being said it can be hunted, and as far as I know there is still some people that hunt it, theres lots of varmints but there is red fox too and they don't tree. I haven't been there in about 10 years so not sure what has changed since then. Biggest thing also...keep your dogs out of the Fort Hunter Ligget miltary base, its huge and patrolled. There is a good barbeque place on the main drag by Trader Joes, I think it's called the Chicken Shack. That's the best I can give you, cheap areas within 30 minutes of the Presidio....hmmmmm....you might want to start looking hard, all that area is a bunch of rich people an big houses.

If you're not living on post, I suggest you consider looking a bit more inland towards Salinas; the more east you go, the cheaper it will be...especially if you want to have dogs.

Pops, i am monterey native living in salinas. When you get over here you send me a pm and you can catch some hogs with me. PS. Enjoy the sun while you can. You will never see the sun again at the presidio. Its foggy almost every day
