Rookie cat hunter

Need a little help from you dry ground cat hunters. Most of you have forgotten more than I know so I am coming to you with hat in hand. How do you guys locate a good track to start? Has anyone used trapping lures to start a cat off a bait? How do you guys find tracks when you don't have dogs that you can cast?

drive lots of roads or walk them in a good cat spot on a leash if you have to. The shock coller works good to keep them from running crazy when trying to cast.

If you are serious about this, the cheapest thing you can do is find you a good broke fiinished cat dog.

As far as finding tracks in roads, depending on the ground, soil, sand, rocks, etc, I probably find (cat tracks) about 2 or 3 out of 10 when my dogs cross the road trailing on a cat and I know they are smelling a cat and the cat has crossed right there. That's on dry ground conditions. And I have to really look and study to find them 2 or 3 tracks.

You will be walking or driving over cat tracks that you will never know are there and wasting lots of time, if you don't have a good broke cat dog to find the trails for ya. Just my thoughts. Robbie

I don't hunt in dry ground conditions, but do hunt without snow. We hunt "bare" ground, and having a finished rig dog is the most successful way to start hunting cats.
Also, try and find someone in your hunting area that might be willing to let you tag along. That is great way to gain some knowledge from someone who has spent the time in the woods, and been successful.
