Time to put the dogs up...
Time to put the dogs up...
Well it's official. Someone has flipped the idiot switch. Time for deer season again here in Texas. I went with my two boys and two young dogs to lock open my hog trap this morning and what I thought to be dove hunters on the next property over turned out to be weekend warriors firing a few warning shots and then staying beside me(on their side of the fence) while I drove out. I know nobody lives on that place, it's a cattle place and evidently some great guys deer hunt it too. Boy oh boy I wanted to crawl in the cab of that dodge deisel but I had my two sons with me. Wouldnt be much of an example would it?
About a week ago some jackleg waited at my truck that was parked on the side of the road. When I got back with my two dogs, he asked me what I was doing. I politely said "working these young dogs". I then politely, very politely, asked why. He said " well I saw your tailgate down and just wondered what you were doing". I said "Oh. Ok. Do you share property line with these folks?" He said no. Very politely, I asked him if there was something wrong. He asked me "What do those dogs hunt?" I said "Whatever I tell them to". Keep in mind a 5 month old plott and an 8 month old b&t are by my truck sitting, staying, and watching me while this conversation is happening. He said "Do they chase deer?" I said "Not more than once." He reminded me that the tailgate down looked suspicious and to have a good evening. Stupid deer hunters.
I enjoy a small cooler of beer and a deer blind just like the next guy, but for the life of me I can't understand how people who claim to be "Country Boys" can get so ignorant over a dog that any other time of the year they love.

Dear hunters are my favorite kinda folks bitch if there's lions and bitch louder if your interfering with "their season". If anyone ever makes the mistake of firing at me or my kids it will be their last. That's one kinda stupidity you can't wait to judge. You might just be mistaken.

(Those people) start it here october 1. They think every deer they see belongs to them, even if it is on the hoof.
Re: Time to put the dogs up...
if anyone ever fired a "warning shot " at my kids , the dogs would be the least of their worries

The lack of civility between the different outdoor factions is very troubling. It has been all too easy for those that oppose all hunting and trapping to effectively use divide and conquer strategies against us.
It amazes me how ignorant the general hunting public can be about hounds. Many view them as packs of vicious beasts that will rip apart any animal that crosses their path! I have a hound that is very good at blood trailing so I jump at any chance to help a hunter find lost game and see first hand how hounds really work. Kind of my own personal hound-dog ambassadorship program!
I allow the general public to hunt on my ranch land.
When big game season opens here, I just shift to hunting coons at night and try to avoid conflicts. Our cat season opens after the deer/elk season closes so there are very few problems then.
Still----- I occasionally run across folks that act like they "own these woods" and try to run me off of my own property!

LOL wow I can't even put into words what I would of said to them guys. I've had guys tell me they would shoot my dogs if they see them go buy when there hunting. And I always calmy explain how it would be in there best interest not to. Just reading your story makes me mad.
Re: Time to put the dogs up...
Hard to believe but guys get that way about right now. By December it will get a lot better. Dogs get shot all the time. Deer season doesn't last that long so give em room I say. I hate drama. I hate the spotlight. I hate to be on the radar. I run my mouth on this forum way more than out in the open. If I thought it would make a difference I would have approached them. But you can't talk to someone who isn't rational. And you certainly can't fix stupid.

Sad to say, but this is one of the reasons that I mostly quit hunting in Texas. In Cleveland where I live, years ago you could not drive thru town without seeing half a dozen dog boxes. You can go a year without seeing one nowadays. Very Sad.

what gets me is they still call it hunting . i'm sorry but ...SITTING ON TOP OF A PILE OF CORN IS NOT HUNTING !! but i can see some of their frustation after all they only pay about 200.00 a lb to sit in a comforatable blind and kill a poor starving deer . and then brag about all the skills and how mighty a hunter they are .to all their friends back at the office .but what ya gonna do ? luckily i hunt hogs and have places to run where there aern't any deer . thats where i'll be during deer season .
