California Mountain Lion?

Post by Dale T »

I'm hoping that some of you guys from other states that have Mountain Lion seasons can tell how in Ca. in 1994 when F&G did there last Lion study they est. that we had between 4,000-6,000 lions and after 17 years they still est. that we have 4,000-6,000 lions, without hunting and less than 100 per year killed on average under a depredation permit.

It's based on the amount of available habitat that they think CA. has to support lions. They think that 6000 lions is all the habitat there is available and so that number really won't go up because of it. But the surounding states thank you because all of your excess lions head out of state to find thier own place to live and that sure helps the other states!

Maybe they forgot to mention that it is 4 to 6,000 lions per section of Cali. Southern, Central and Northern. That would give you a more realistic number. Yes and FullCryHounds is right. Nevada loves Californias lion population and what their overflow does for our hunting along the border.

it's too bad they would rather kill 100 lions in depredation situations then sell 100 tags for 100 dollars a peice, make 10 grand and let the houndsmen enjoy them.
"Houndn'Ems Blueticks" if it smells like a cat, they'll catch it.

It's because prop 119 passed years ago by a vote from the people outlawing hunting them or even posessing them. You cannot even bring one into the state if you shoot one somewhere else. I used to use a Tannery in CA but they were not allowed to tan them because of this law and so I had to switch tannners. When I ran dogs out there, we could get a depredation tag anytime from our local warden, just had to call him and he'd fill one out for us right away. Before the ban, the quota for the whole state was 186 lions. Then after the ban went into affect, there were over 250 lions being killed on depredation permits every year. Don't know what the numbers are today. I've never been back since I left...and have no desire to.

Alberta has done a mirror image with the grizzlies in this province as California did with the lions

We have bears where bears have never been, and in higher numbers than ever before.
Yet no season and they kill more than they ever did during the regulated hunt.
One trail cam shows 8 grizzly at one time at a grain bin out on the prairie.
Our Game and Fish is handcuffed politicaly... I was told by a VERY reliable source that the Department will be uthenizing bears within the next year or less, they have no more room to move them, politics limits them to where they can be placed for public safety reasons so the next step is to distroy them and DISPOSE of the carcass!!!!!

NO chance of a regulated hunt but kill and waste them.

Sounds like our Government maybe had a visit with some of the fellas that drew up Calif. law on lions when we we not lookin!!
