Saw on another forum where a guy spotted a couple of lions while scouting for another hunt...a spotlight was used just for observation....at some point he shot one of the lions and it ran off....never was recovered in spite of his friend bringing dogs out....next day spots another lion and shoots it....runs off and was eventually found and killed....ended up being a 10 month old kitten according to game and fish apparently....the comments were along the line of " good job, killed a deer eater before it got grown"'. My question is this, what other species of animal would that reasoning apply to. 1 animal shot and never recovered...1 10 month old animal shot and killed and that is a good thing.???
Oh well, I must be getting old and crotchety!

Re: Spot and shoot
The whole idea that a human being who possibly just left McDonalds with a Big Mac, freis and a shake has any more right to drive down a road and blast a deer than a lion has to kill that deer to consume is crazy.
Get them lions you hound hunters because they are killing all MY DEER! I have heard that many times. In fact I had a Senior Game Dept.s spouse corner me in a gun store one day and told me to get off my a$$ and get them dogs out on such and such a mesa and kill all them lions becasue he drew a deer tag in there and he didn't want some hungry lion standing in the way of him possibly getting that bragging sized buck.
I quoted him a line from the Tom Selleck movie Monte Walsh.

IF you did that in my area chances are you would end up with a border crosser or even a border patrol agent(they wear dark green that can look black in shade).
I know of two people that got lions with bows last year by spotting and stalking from a highway as the lion were eating on deer along the highway...

my point was with out dogs or a bait pile to closely look at your bear you don't really know what your shooting, could be boar or sow you have to wait and see what you got once its on the ground.

first of all what a dam shame 10 month lion,i get that shit all the time about deer killers most every day but even ranchers say they think they had some calves missing but not for sure some people just talk to much smack . most lions i catch are really skinny
and they think they kill a deer a week i call bs maybe one every three weeks

Re: Spot and shoot
Whew...purty much got hammered for my view on killing a 10 month old female. Lots of folks feel like if they have a tag, they will shoot any cat, regardless of size or gender. Mostly deer hunters who still labor under the perception that lions are the scourge of deer herds. Apparently lions are viewed as varmints by many who have never had the opportunity to enjoy a hunt with hounds that provides the hunter with the privilege of selectively harvesting a quality trophy. Kinda puzzles me that folks don't consider the lion to be a trophy big game animal. Oh well, different strokes for different folks.
