Who catches every time
I am truely not trying to start anything but am wanting to know who as a houndsmen on this site or know of any one that has dogs that catch 100% of the time all the time no excuses? I am very curious to know and also what strain and how long it took to get to this level. Andy

Not me. Never even heard anyone claim to in person... and I've heard some pretty amazing claims.

Oh this is going to start something. *Grabs popcorn*
But, in my opinion : Too many variables in the woods to ALWAYS catch. Obviously there are great dogs (none in my kennels) but none can always overcome the variables.
Think of athletes, has there EVER been an athlete that, makes every shot? Throws a touchdown on every pass? Or even wins every game?
Like I said, my opinion, I'm not always right.

Re: Who catches every time
I copied this from another post but i am pretty sure that this post stemmed from what was wrote below. I did not write what was below i just moved it over here, and i am going to try and stay out of it.
I usually cruise this site and get a good chuckle, but because my name was thrown in i thought i should respond. In Eric Muff's defense i will explain a little further what he was getting at.....I am an outfitter in British Columbia and get to hunt the dogs alot which makes it easier to get a good pack of dogs. 3 months in the spring with the bears and 3months in the winter running cougar, lynx and bobcat. the same dogs are out every time. With the help of the GPS system, when we start the track early in the day, we catch the bear or cat....no excuses .I run with Joe Conroy and Eric Muff and we have the same line of hound and when we run we expect the dogs to produce with or without a client. over the years we have run and bred this line and they do catch everytime. I know alot of readers will say BS about catchin everytime and heck before this line 15yrs ago i said the same thing and was happy catching 50%....

I do not doubt the quality of the posters dogs. I agree with him/her, the more you hunt your dogs the better they are, and it sounds like they hunt their dogs a lot.
But right in the post, they leave a line, if we start a track early enough. So even when they are trying to say they catch everything, they are saying they do not catch everything. They catch most things? Yup. Great dogs? Yup. But always catch?
Ok, I have to admit, this has been a fun little topic so far.

When I turn loose on a cat I fully expect to catch it..
Does it happen every time? Absolutely not
But I like to keep my hopes up

Re: Who catches every time
i think a better post would be what is the longest anyone has gone on a certain game animal catching 100 percent or something like that .its a more realistic question.
Re: Who catches every time
I don't no about other hunters but as i am awhere of 100% of game caught who ever may claim that is full of it for the simple factor of the O mighty Mother Nature.
Re: Who catches every time
hell you kids ain't right .personally who cares ? like my grnpappy used to tell me and i quote . boy it's the huntin thats fun not the killin . end quote . i like a dry run as much as catchin [hogs ] and it's kinda hard to lie about how big and bad they was when they layin on the tailgate .

Re: Who catches every time
Twist I tried to post reply but didnt work so I try again, hopefully dosnt double post. When I first got started in hounds I hunted with a group of guys that seemed to catch every single time they dumped while I was picking up my dogs off the road or chasing trash. I was more than happy with catching 50% and was thrilled when my dogs were at a tree with theirs. I finally got a pup from them and my catch rate immediatly increased.I was still grabbin dogs off the road but now I had one that would stick. Around 13 years ago I wound up buyng a female from PA and Marty grabed a male. We started breeding and our catch rate went up to around 75-85%. For the past 8 -10 years We started some heaving culling but Marty Eric and myself stuck with the breeding program and now we catch near 100%.Lets not be immature about it, there are situations when the cat or bear does something and the hound simply cannot get there. We all know that so for those people chirpin, grow up about calling out the "everytime" comment. Other than that when we dump we catch, call BS all you want, its a fact. Our theory is if 1 dog sticks it they all should stick it, very simple. We do sell 85% hounds and it is not easy to do sometimes but to mantain a top pack you have to. Being an Outfitter we have opportunity to hunt 5-7 days a week and time on the ground is what makes a dog, hunting 2 days a week you simply cant get the same results in my opinion. We sell all 3 cats, black bear and grizzly bear hounds hunts and you cant say to a hunter who just paid big money I "hope" we can catch this one. We run the bears typically with 2-4 hounds unless we all hook up. I like to keep a kennel of 4 and inject a pup every 18mons or so. Its taking several years and lots of honest critqueing of your own pack and just simply being honest with yourself. Ever notice that the dog(s) that are always there you never make an excuse for? But fluffy got hung up, zigged when he should have zagged couldnt cross the river, think he went backwards, just too tired....move him. Thats my 2 bits Twist

Re: Who catches every time
The best we ever did was four out five but that was after hunting our dogs hard for a bear season and not catching much at the beginning. We had a dog die then the catch rate hit bottom again till the dogs started stepping up again.
Re: Who catches every time
Now i cant speak for everyone but i can say that i seem to catch 100% of the time when im TRASHIN. When i run cats there are quite a few variables. I dont like to make excuses and im not the guy to say well the conditions were bad or the track was melting out ect. I dont really keep track of how many tracks i turn out on to how many i catch........It just really dont matter all that much to me. I turn out on any cat track i find even if its headed to where i dont like it to be going. I dont think we should keep a stats catigory on hounds because i think we can all agree that it would be painfully obvious if you kept dumping dogs out and then picking them up without the fir in the tree then its time for a "fresh start". I dont come on here to tell everyone that my dogs are "the shit" or just flat ass are "shit" because we all have very different opinions on what a good or bad dog is and to you or i these dogs can either be "the shit" or just "shit". Now i do believe that these guys that have the time to hunt every single day do have for the most part better dogs then i do and i always question what caliber of dogs i would have if they got hunted hard
I doubt that for what these outfitters do for a living that they can leave room for a dog that would only be able to catch 60% of the time because in a week long hunt you might only be able to strike one or two bears or find one or two cat tracks, sometimes thats just the reality of hunting and we have all been there. Do i think that these guys can catch 100% of the time???? Sure why not? Who am i to tell a guy that hunts for a living that hes full of shit? As far as this topic goes I think the only way for any of us to find out is to either go hunt with the guys that catch 100% of the time or either quit our day jobs and hunt full time to find out, until then we are all just guessing.

Re: Who catches every time
Marshall, I'm glad mine don't catch even 50% of the trash they run. Otherwise, I'd wear out two pair of boots per week walkin into the bay ups. hahahha
I did keep track for a few months one winter years ago and I caught 45 out of 50 jumped cats. I have no idea how many I trailed and beat around on without jumping them. Now days, I catch 2 out of 3 dogs that I turn loose.
