Four Stroke vs Two Stroke Sleds? Pros and Cons

Post by imchestnut »

I am looking at getting a new-to-me sled. I was wondering if the four strokes were any more reliable than the two strokes?

I have heard the downsides to the four strokes are they are heavier and not as much acceleration and power.

But, where I hunt, you can only ride the roads and trails so nothing is too steep or too much powder. Just looking for the most reliable sled I can get my hands on because most of the time I am hunting alone.

If your not worried about the weight and the price tag to go along with it go with the 4 stroke. My self I like the two strokes because they are lighter and they cost a lot less to buy and fix. I had a yamaha apex 1000 it was a good sled had it for two years untell I tolted it out.

If you don't mind spending the money on a four stroke sled it might be worth looking into a used tracked four Wheeler. You can haul your dogs a lot easier on it and depending on what track setup,
you can stop wherever you want and not worry about being stuck

What is your buget? You can pick up a little yamaha phazer for pretty cheap, they are quiet and do pretty good, as long as your not into hill climbing.

x2 on the phazer, it's no big mountain sled, but if you want something that you can ride instead of work on it's hard to go wrong with one of those. First scheduled tune up is 10,000 miles. If you get a used one make sure that it has had all of the updates. there was a couple small issues on the '07-'09 years, but they've got them pretty well figured out by now. They do fairly well in the powder, but they're no hill climber.

I bought a tundra with an 800 4 stroke, best sled I ever had. It will stick in deep powder, but with the flexible track extention, It backs up almost anywhere. I can haul four dogs in the box and a rider or two. It has low end torque like my cummins and don't stink. The only dowside is it is cold to ride. Being used to 550 fans I never really rode for pleasure anyway, just to look for tracks. I will probably never by another two stroke.
