Calling techniques

Post by pigstickndude »

My wife, kids & I have just bought our first call and have been out once. Not much luck, got some yotes to talk to us, but no show. Would like to know some techniques that will help. Call constant, every few minutes, or anything will be helpful. My kids are really looking for their first dog!!

Get u two peacock feathers, the long ones. Break them in half nd lash them so u have a fan. Tie this to a string on a stick nd place about 20-40 yards in front (downwind). That gives them something to watch instead of u. U cant move if ur calling them.

Calling wise i do a distress rabbit with a few barks nd then shut up for a few. No loud calling if u can see the dog as they will locate u. I do have a secret weapon thanks to my dogs. I took the reed out of a squeak toy that was destuffed nd insert that into a mcdonalds straw. I have to replace the straw every so often but it is a very soft call that u can blow really loud, but i blow it really soft to. Ring them in a lil closer. Nd i get a lil louder if they spook to get them to stop for one last possible shot.

Good luck nd hope this helps. Oh yeah i only kill about one every few times out so i am not the king of calls at all. I do know though that i will call a lil after shooting one nd every once in a while i can double by doing this.

Are you using an E caller or hand calling them? Most guys just starting out call to loud and to much. I like to start of calling soft and if notting comes in after 5 min I will turn it up. Once you see a dog coming in I will not call again unless it stops or looks like its going to turn and go a diffrent way. As Medic4049 said give them something to look at other then you, I picked up one of them cheap robo rabbits and it works amazing I have had dogs come in and been less then an inch from it smelling it when they got wacked. Best of luck to you.

If you can get them to answer back that is a good start, just keep after it, keep it simple and pay attention to the wind, I would be willing to bet that all the ones that answered you busted you before you ever saw them.

Thank you for the input. We have a cheap e call right now, but are probably about to upgrade. And start using a decoy.. Thanks again.
