feeding beef to dogs.
i have a guy thats going to give me the left overs from the cows hes butchering himself, i was wondering what i should feed the dogs, i figured all the scraps, and bones? but what about all in insides of the cow? and how should i cook it up first. i thought maybe boiling it in a crab pot, and saving the juice to poor over there dry feed, and give them the meat every few days. does any one else do this? should i even cook any of the scraps?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: feeding beef to dogs.
I feed beef hearts and lungs to my dogs once or twice a week as a treat to supplement their dry food. I feed raw meat. I immediately freeze the meat and then I thaw out and use as I need it. It is good for about 6 months in the freezer. I cut them both into bite size pieces (1" cubes).
I also get the livers. I do cook the livers. I boile them in water with a heavy dose of garlic salt in the water. The dogs go really nuts over this as a treat. I cut the liver into half inch thick strips by about 1 1/2" wide and as long as the liver.
Other animals that are good are sheep and hogs. Be sure your dogs are on a regular dewormer. And get ready to find a local butcher that will sell you more after they get used to these treats.
Hope this helps.

Re: feeding beef to dogs.
Is there anybody out there that feeds their dogs meat and only meat? I wonder if it helps out the dogs overall, considering the fact they are canines and their ancestors eat meat and only meat.

Re: feeding beef to dogs.
I've been feeding a lot of beef to my dogs. I buy it ground (meat and bone) in 60 lbs blocks and cut it into blocks with an axe and small sledge. What I feed is a bit too lean where the butcher shop scraps will have a high percentage of fat. I add beef fat but would like to find some kind of oil to increase the fat intake. I feed only meat a while and then feed dog food and meat every couple days. I'm not sure that this is the best feed, would prefer chicken, but they like it. Oh yeah I feed it frozen and it keeps the teeth clean. Terry
Re: feeding beef to dogs.
I read a vets. book awhile back and it said dogs cannot survive on meat alone.
Re: feeding beef to dogs.
I've found a place to buy fish oil that I now give every other day at a time other that feeding time. I do feed some dog food that I think takes care of any needs the meat doesn't cover. Will judge further when I start to run coyotes soon.
Re: feeding beef to dogs.
Terry , where did you get your fish oil and how of a bottle ?
Thanks;John

Re: feeding beef to dogs.
John I found it in a feed store sold as a horse supplement. 21.xx+ tx for a gallon. Doesn't seem to have any soy oil.
Re: feeding beef to dogs.
Thanks Terry , I'll look for it at TSC ,maybe they'll have some. I've been making dog feed out of meat scraps from the local butcher shop and I thaught about adding fish oil to the mix .
Re: feeding beef to dogs.
I use a mixture of dog food and meat. Right now they are getting venision scraps from the deer hunt. My favorite I get from a local grocery store. They started selling chicken backs and there is anywhere from 8-10 pieces in one package and I never pay over $1.50 for the package. I buy every package when I am there and freeze it for latter. Dogs love the fresh chicken and can't beat the price.
Re: feeding beef to dogs.
FNT also has a few different fish oils for sale for a decent price...

Re: feeding beef to dogs.
I had no luck at TSC but I did get a bottle of cod liver oil at the Bulk Barn . It brought back bad memories, as a kid we grew up on it
Re: feeding beef to dogs.
The intesine are commonly called tripe. That is the part of the cow that holds all the digestive enzymes. It is good to feed as the enzymes will aid the dog in getting the most of the feed.
Wal-Mart sells ground Flax seed powder which is good for Omega 3&6. It is around $7 and will last 1 dog being fed a spoonfull about 30 days give or take.
I fed an all RAW die for a few years and the dogs ate good and shit less.
About all meat has a higher content of water so you will notice a drop in consumption from the water bowl.
