Thanks Jube and Mike for the help

Post by just2hunt »

Over the last 4 years I got the bug to hunt lions with hounds that turned into an obsession...pestered Julian Baker (Jube)...who hooked me up with Mike Leonard. Ran around with Mike some and heard him say a few crazy things I thought were rambling from years of insanity chasing lions. Last year Jube got me hooked up with a couple of hounds to train. Trained dogs from December of last year and still going. Treed one bear and thought I was home free on lions! Boy was I wrong. Ran 4 sets of tracks and was beat. Had several friends along. Dogs were just starting to put noses in tracks, but would not roll down the track after trailing. I was pretty beat after all that work when Jube texted me to find out how I was doing. I said not good; when he said you need one of my old dogs to help you get rolling. It was a humbling moment, but I needed help. Not very often a houndsman helps another really unravel the mystery....especially with dog training. Jube you was right buddy I needed help and that old crazy cat tracker Mike Leonard was right on the money too. Guess that rambling was not crazy after all.....the lions do go into the cracks in the ledges to hide.

A buddy cut a track took us 2 days of running over ledges and canyons to get to this cat who took refuge in a crack. My buddy took this cat after a fine chase with an old knowledgeable hound from many lions with Jube and it sure helped those young maniac dogs of mine slow down to follow a lion. Those cats do jump high on those ledges, straight up, and straight down; dangerous business for man, dogs, and lions!

The learning has just begun I suspect, and doubt the training ever ends, and I mean more for me than the hounds.

Just wanted to thank you both for your help, it was very much appreciated. Thanks for trusting me with that dog Jube and your encouragement!

I know that this doesn't have anything to do with me, but I just wanted to say that it takes a special person to humble themself to the point of asking for and FOLLOWING the advice that is given. You must have been doing your part, or the chances of borrowing a dog of the caliber needed, would be slim at best. I don't know Jube, but I have gotten to know Mike personally. I once called Mike and told him of someone needing help, and I wasn't in a position to do anything. Mike never even blinked. He got in touch with the other person and did everything that he could.

Keep up the good work just2hunt!! The longer you hunt lions, the more you'll realize you don't know much.

This was the best post I have read on this site in a long time!! That is so awesome you you learned from and appreciated the help and advice you got from some real lion hunting greats. I admire you for sharing this story. It is guys like you that will indeed succeed at running lions and starting young dogs. I had the same help years ago from a few lion hunting greats as well. Brent Switzer and Shawn Labrum. They helped me with getting some good young dogs and taught me not only how to train them but how to find lions and hunt them. Even to this day when I am out on the mountain I think about those men and what I learned from them. More recently I had another great lion hunter help me out after I sold the last of my dogs in 2008. BennyG was kind enough to offer me a little bluetick "Bella" and 2 redtick pups "Puma and Onza" Not many houndsmen these days will help someone learn and give their best bred hounds to someone. The men you mentioned and the 3 I mentioned are few and far between and in my opinion they are the greatest houndsmen out there. Again thanks for sharing that and congrats :)
I like my men like I like my mountains...... Rugged, challenging, and WILD!!!

There are still a few quality individuals out there and it's great to have someone give credit where credit is due to those who deserve it.

Hats off to those of you who have helped fellow houndsmen and women...without standing together, sharing and helping one and other we are the ones who will loose our own war against the anti's who are there daily to stop hound hunting.

Hope everyone is having a safe and successful season...

Good Luck and Good Hunting this season

You boys think I was crazy rambling on about lions? Hell they thought Ben Lilly was crazy too, and he was! LOL! I ain't no Ben Lilly but you want to see something special you need to go on a real hunt with me and Benny G while we stalk the wiley Prayer Dog. We are about as good as it gets this side of Chinle on these bad boys and let me tell you we can make some mouth watering dishes after the hunt.

Come go with us just be dang sure to bring welding gloves and googles cuz things can get a little risky out there once the fire is started. LOL!

Keep after them Amigos!

Awesome job! I don't know Jube but I have heard he is an outstanding hunter and person.

I do know Mike and there is not a more generous man alive than him. He and BennyG have become very good friends of mine and have helped me in many ways. I know there are people on here that try to pick fights with Mike and all but not many have been fortunate to hunt with him. They don't know the hours he spends horseback with his dogs and the time he puts in to hunting, and for those that think he isn't catching game then you don't have a clue. So Mike thanks for all of us you have helped, for the many hours you've spent horseback with me, the dogs and more than anything your friendship. May god bless you and Benny and thanks again, for all you have both done for so many people.

Thanks for all the good words.

I am not much of a poster; this was too cool not to share-my first solo lion catch. I let this youngster roll on out after enjoying myself and having a friend stop by to pull me off of the ledge with a rope, and spending a couple of hours taking pictures.

JUBE thanks again. My dogs are rolling down the track now my friend. You were on the money! I got to watch my dogs roll down the track finally.

I look forward to drinking a beer with you soon.
