Friends,
Amazing Curr Kennels has a letter of second generation 1/2 Treeing Walker and 1/2 Mountain Curr. I deer hunt in Mexico on a ranch that is overpopulated with cats. Unfortunately with Mexico's current climate we are not able to follow dogs long distances. The hope is to have the nose of a Walker and the range of a Curr. Amazing Curr Kennels is in St Louis, Missouri where the dogs squirrel and coon hunt. Am I on the right track? Is it probable the dogs will be cat minded? Thanks,

hell madre you just wont never know till you try one . i hog hunt with walker/catahoula crosses and do great i get a medium range dog thats got a hell of a nose and bottom . i am fixing to have a litter of pups that will be 1/2 whitedeer plott over a 3/4 catahoula plott gyp . they'll be 5/8 plott and 3/8 catahoula . i have high hopes for them the gyp has been line bred out of my dogs . i'm up in north east texas if you want to give one a shot give me a shout at 469-658-2534 or any body else for that matter . some of my crosses are tight mouthed some semi open . those mountain curs for the most part are open dogs . that would be the only problem with the cur crosses . i don't think a tight mouthed cat dog would be good except with these new trackin systems . but then a tight mouthed dog would sneak up on em like mine do a hog probley scare the heck out of a cat and make it go up quick .

Thanks for the response Half Breed.
I think you are right. All dogs have their pros and cons. I was thinking that a dog that is silent on trail would be good. At the end of the day its getting a dog their and going to work.

only my 2 cents mexican money haha
I think you're Robert, I hunt with you years ago, where you say the ground is very dry, and there's not many cat, when I hunt we had hours without a trace, this translates to finding good lines of dogs, and haser what other successful hunters, Luis Chapa is a houndsmen sheet has hunted for over 40 years with dogs running beagle mix, I hunt with and I have the same dogs, we tried many lines and that we liked
the soil type and shape of condisiones hunt are different in Mexico, so it is good to hunt with people of other parties and watch it grab.
good luck with your dogs and if I can help I will do it glad
greetings and I sorry if you're not Robert

Sierra Madre,
I have watched that particular kennel from a distance for many years. It has always interested me because my best dogs have had both cur and hound blood. But I am a northern bobcat hunter and not a Mexican lion hunter. I would bet money those dogs could catch a certain percentage of bobcats in the country I hunt. I do not know if they would have the nose for that dry area. I can sure see why Memo and his freinds would infuse some beagle blood. I am pretty sure those "treeing curs" will not have nearly the track sense, nose and unquenchable drive that a beagle would bring to the mix.
Here is my other thought on that kennel. I have noticed that they started out with great vigor over a cur /hound cross. Then they made a line by breeding back on it. then, they again crossed out on a high powered hound. Why? My guess is it is because they are looking again for that "amazing" that really rarely happens once you get very far past that original hybrid cross. I am sure this kennel would not appreciate me giving my opinion when I have never even seen one of their dogs. It is just that I have read everything I can find on them and thought long and hard about it. You are talking about the f2 or second generation. From my limited experience, the f1 is where it all happens. From there on, it is just an attempt to get the fire back again. why not just use f1 dogs?
If I had been hunting hard and in a position to add a pup, I sure would have tried to buy one of the pups directly from their hound outcross. Beyond that, I would have to see it to beleive it. I hope some day I can see it, and beleive it.
But in answer to your question will these dogs like cats? My answer would be without a doubt, yes. And if you only want the occasional, shorter, hotter races with dogs that would be a pleasure to be around and handle real easy, they might fit the bill for you.
One of the coldest tracking dogs I have witnessed for bobcat was a hound/cur cross. But I expect that this is unusual. The hound was a big eared big game bred dog with roots in Arizona, and slower than molasses. One time I ran him down from behind when he was giving it his all on a deer! that is SLOW. But this 1/2 cur 1/2 hound was also unbeaten as a rig dog. This also came from her hound father who was from a line of automatic rig dogs.
