Re: Mexico Cat Dog type
It sounds like the leopard cur would work for you, I've hunted and bred these dogs for 20 years and they are fast track dogs with good noses on them and they will hunt closer and not range out a 1/2 mile to look for a track, very smart and easy to train or break off unwanted game. The only drawback would be their coat of hair, some of them are pretty thick. Right now I mainly use mine for bear but have in the past used them extensively for lion and bobs and they did a good job on them as well, a very versatile dog. Click on my link and you can see some pics. of the dogs. Mike

Personally, I think you COULD use the same Catahoula for a cow dog and a cat dog (if it fits the bill in your part of the world). I know plenty of people around here that use theirs for both and I have too. One thing you need to remember is that a Catahoula doesn't really "herd" cattle like a heeler or border collie. They "work" cattle. We have a lot of wild cattle in the marshes, swamps and big woods that are seldom, if ever, seen by the human eye. Catahoulas track and by cattle just like they would any other game. When a tough old mamma cow makes a break for higher ground, Catahoulas get in front of them and stop them. They almost never work the back end of a cow like a heeler and when a cow stops to blow, they'll bay just like on any other game. I've seen plenty that would work cattle all day, but still tree a coon at night.

It sounds like you need a dog that stays close like a cur, but has enough nose to trail a cat in those dusty hot conditions, and wouldn't hurt if it could work cattle some? Have you thought about a crossed up dog ? Maybe half cur half hound, or 3/4 cur 1/4 hound? If you're real worried about dogs running out of the country, get something with a little less hound. It sounds like you'll cover so much country checking cattle you should certainly run across some warm to hot tracks if there's cat's in your area?

Haha, just now noticed how old this thread was! Hope you found something that works by now!
