Just getting started

Post by Dillon »

Hi there,I am new to hunting with dogs.I am purchasing a Cameron blue pup in a few months.I also am buying a pup out of Arizona in may(Jeff Allen/god wick bred) I am unsure about buying a third pup because of starting 3 pups would probably be very hard.but I don't want to get screwed on buying a started or finished hound that I know nothing about.it would be appreciated if someone could give me some advise.

Have said it many times if you dont know what you are doing one pup is enough. Its hard enough with more than one pup even if you think you know what you are doing. You are just looking for one big head ache. Andy

I understand what you are saying.so just starting out if I were to buy a started hound to run with a pup would that be better.

Sometimes with a pack of pups and no older dogs its a long time from training to tree.
The older dog will teach pups more than you can or that they can figure out on there own
Be careful and pay for started dog under tree if it is what you want.

Thanks for the info.I am very dedicated to making this work out.I will probably try and find a started or finished dog.but how do you know someone is telling the truth about what they are selling.it seems like someone could sell a dog that went hunting once and call it a finished dog.

Make them sell it under the tree, sometimes you can get some on a trial period but if you are green yourself that probably isnt the best way. where are you at in nevada?

Sell it under the tree = owner to show the dog in the field hunting to the buyer. If the buyer likes what he see's then he buys the dog.

dillon,

I would most definantley get a finished dog. A good finished dog will teach your pups and teach yourself more than you could imagine. When I first started out, I was like you and had pups and no experience. It didnt work. two years later I bought a good seasoned lion dog, and started catching lions and bobcats. I also started getting young dogs going in the right direction. How are you related to Dusty and Danny Ham? I used to work with them out at Turquoise Ridge for Connors Drilling. Good Luck

Dillon congratulations on making the worst decision of your life getting hounds. You will be broke, divorced and your truck will be falling apart in no time. I started a little over a year ago like you with just pups and not much experience. Still to this day all I've put up a tree without the help of other peoples dogs is a one bear. If you want to save time and lots of headache do what most these guys say and buy a finished dog. And yes I did get burned trying this because I did not buy under a tree. Anyone with a dog worth selling will show you the dog in action. Good Luck and happy hunting
