Dumped Pups
This weekend some #$@$%&$#
ahole dumped three 6 month old hound pups out near a wolf populated national forest in northwestern wyoming. They looked to be at least half black and tan. The local houndsmen rallied and found two of the three homes by this writing. I am porud of the way everyone jumped to the cause!! Our local shleter will not adopt to hunting homes, they would rather the dog live in a cage for the rest of their life. Just thought you all would like a warm fuzzy story to start the week!

Won't adopt to hunting homes? One word comes to mind when I read that, STUPID. The majority of dogs at our local animal shelter are hunting dogs anyways. Not sure how good they are but it looks like most of the hunters around here don't use GPS. lol That's a terrible thing to do to a pup too. There's always somebody interested in a pup.

I realy don't know why a non-hunter would want a hound that wants to hunt... would be tuff to break them off all game.
I would suppose that they don't want to adopt out to someone that will cull the dogs if they don't work out. Maybe you can promise to bring them back if they are not working out as hunters. And that way they will know the dogs might make beter pets than hunters...
Likly that will not work and they would just put the hounds down rather than bother trying to fit a hunting dog into non-hunting homes.
Stupid is right...

I'm sure the humane society is not the best place to find a great hunting dog, but the way i look at it; $50 at 10:1 pays the same as $250 at 2:1.Rockcreek wrote:Or you could stop looking for hunting dogs at the freaking pound... LOL! Just a suggestion... I know you probably never thought of looking to a successful hunter huh....? LOL!

I do have to say that we have never got a dog from the pound but, we did get a free plott from a newspaper ad. She is our lead dog. Our shelters are manned by... well lets just say we call them a bit touched. I know of a lady up in Billings, MT that when she gets a hound in her rescue she gets it out and sees if it will have any drive to hunt. Also I have heard of a another shelter in Idaho that tries to test out the hunting ability as well.
My point was that we tried to place all of these pups so that they would stay out of the shelter and have a chance.

Had crazy old boy that lived locally that was a squatter... He had about 4 dogs that were that White Cloud breeding... Well he got arrested one day and all the dogs went to the pound.. Friend of ours went down the same day and said he would like to adopt them. They denied him because he has a barking dog citation from 6 years earlier (didn't even live in the same place). He asked how long the dogs had before they were put down. 72 hours. My boyfriend went down the next day.. They had put them all to sleep.. Said they were miserable in their kennels and they didn't feel that they could be adopted out.. Cops were almost called over that one.. 'Round here our shelters don't look too kindly on hunting dogs and you sure aren't going to get one if you are a hunter..
It's pretty stupid....

MKT,
Thats great you got those pups out to hunting homes.
I emailed the shelter here again. IDK what will happen. IDK what kind of checks they do. Most people i know that have ad hounds or even beagles, just for pets, talk about how much they run off and bark. These dogs need to hunt. Mine certainly let me know that.

Update
The local boys in blue found the guy who dumped the pups! Calimed that he gave them away and could come up with the guys name.
Happy to report that we hunted with one of those little buggers along and she was right up with the big hounds baying away.
