first bobcat

Post by timothy »

Decided to leave work early and do some huntin this morning. I have a elk tag and the 3 bob cat tags left for the year. It was a late start; as ime and Clay (father in law) came down the road I saw the bobcat tracks crossing ahead of me. we stopped and dumped the dogs out on it. they tracked up the hill and circled back around once or twice. I went back to look at the tracks coming down the road. we were beginning to wonder if the cat was just off the road, and looking at the tracks it looked like we probably jumped it as we came up in the truck. the tracks where real tightly grouped then it looked like it stopped turned and looked and then bolted. As I thought about this I heard the dogs blow up and line out. we started walking the direction they were going and found bob cat tracks mixed with the dog tracks at a dead run. I didnt get a picture in the tree, I did not want to risk my first bobcat jumping on me. As soon as I saw it I pulled up and shot it with my old beat up .22 rifle. I ran down to stop the dogs from mauling it too much, I grabbed it and Clay tells me "dude you might want to finish killing it." I looked down and it was looking up at me as i had it by the back of the neck. It was trying to grab me with its paw but it was on the edge of death so I ignored it. the bullet hit below its chin and went out the back of its neck.

Oh you would know if your dog smiles. It is totally obvious. I'm surprised he doesn't, every brother and sister from those litters smiles. Kinda freaked me out the first time I saw it. Looks a little like they want to bite someone, but Harley has always done it and is not aggressive with people. I can't believe how much he looks like her. Congrats on the cats. It gets to be fun when they start doing well doesn't it? Have a good rest of the season. Rigdogs
