Just curious??

Post by Black Mountain »

Went for a lion hunt yesterday with the hounds and the mules. The conditions were horrible to say the least, hard frozen snow on the north slopes and frozen bare ground on the souths. As we rode along trying to out bullshit each other, my buddy says "there's a lion up on that ridge" I didn't believe it at first but sure enough a lion was sneaking up the ridge about 300 yards above us. We made our way up to where we last seen it and the dogs blew up and away they went. They had this female treed in about 10 minutes.
Just curious if many of you have seen lions like this while out hunting?

Not me but lions are mighty scarce in these parts. I think you should have pulled the dogs off the tree quick and headed for the nearest casino. LOL!

Happy New Year!

i have seen a few out hunting, one time in arizona a buddy of mine and i were calling in foxes in some deep grass and suddenly about 30 yards away a med sized lion was stalking me, i stood up and put the crosshairs between its eyes but didnt fire, it turned and ran off and i didnt have a tag, not only that i was undergunned with a 22 mag and tnt hollowpoints, i am always finding lion kills and sign while out deer hunting or shed hunting and occasionally see a small one run across the road when im out on my fourwheeler, but i have never killed one.

I've always kept track of my encounters and I've seen 15 over the years run across the road in front of me while hunting, 13 in this state, 1 in Id., and 1 in Mt. All but the 1 in Mt. I had the dogs with me.

I have done this twice, one time it was like a white out snowing like hell wind blowing i could see a round spot in the road that kind of looked like a old lion track, we were in a place with a bunch of rock bluffs and under cuts anny ways i told my buddy to walk up to the under cut to see if the lion was layed up and sure enough the lion stood up about 5 feet away so i jumped out of the truck and sent him the hounds treed in about 50 yards, the other time two lions laying in the middle of the road sunning sent the hounds treed both in about a 100 yards.

I Think I've counted 7 that I've seen without dogs.

a couple While elk hunting, and they would just skirt the edge of the clear cut or jump up on a stump and have a look over it.

I yelled at one while looking for Dogs lost on a Bear race, it was sitting on a Stump in the bottom of a clear cut, When I got out and yelled for it to come here, it didn't.. Two jumps and it was in the timber.

a couple crossed the road, one actually ran in front of my truck about 20 yard, and ran down the road for about 100-200 yards.

my best experience was I seen one sitting in a clearing in the timber once while I was driving some back country. Me and a buddy got out to see how close we could get and mess around with it, At maybe 50 yards, the cat would crouch down and Circle around us and peek through some bushes at us, we did this a couple times walking straight at it, when we realized that it was doing a better job of Hide and seek than we were and It wasn't running off like we expected it to.. So we headed back for the truck, they are pretty sneaky.

Never have seen one with dogs in tow.

Just yesterday I just stopped by my Brother in Law's to pick him up to go lion hunting. We pulled out of his driveway after loading his dogs and headed up the road to go cut for tracks and no more than 200 yards up the road from his driveway a lion ran across the road in front of us. We went on and checked for tracks and came back at daylight and ran it. It was the first real dryground chase for my dogs and his have been on a few. They did great right up to the point they were crossing into the wrong people's property and the owners caught them up and held them till we got there. The people were very polite and even gave us a ride back to our truck. It was a good day even though we didn't tree.

I have shot 3 in Texas with no dogs just saw the cats while we were javelina and muledeer hunting. One of my clients and I 3 years ago saw 6 lions together. Two adult females with 2 subadults each. I have seen several other singles while hunting private ranches in SE Colorado. I also went to Zimbawe Africa and killed a leopard in the middle of the day. It had freshly killed a Kudu and my guide was hanging baits while I went for a walk. After it was over he said he would never let another client leave his side. The leopard growled a total of 6 times before I could find him in the tall grass.
