i do have a lound little hound that loves to bark. I have thought about taking her and leashing her to a tree and waiting. not sure it would work, but thought it might be worth a try. I would have to sit right next to her, would hate if anything were to happen to her.

Re: best way to hunt wolves
If your in thick timber country chance of killing a wolf by just hunting are slim to none.
I live in some great wolf country, heavy timber with open valley bottoms and grass land and I can count on my fingers the number of wolves and "chances" I have had to kill one in the past 42 years I've lived here and hunted them...
Bait is the most successful method.... some areas it's illegal and where it is legal the weather has to be cold enough to make it last so it keeps the wolves comming in.
Predator calling works as does howling...Patients is the key, if your serious about killing one find where the pack uses an open hill side...they like these spots and use them more than you know....get to a vantage point not to close where you can see...why do you think the wolves use it???
Look for tracks and scat it will tell you they like the spot and they WILL COME BACK!!!
If you are legal to use electronic calls or bait do what ever you can...but don't think your going to go out and kill one right off....it's happened but rare when it does.
I just put out close to 200 snares and 8 legholds today, wolves are woking baits and I will be surprised if I have anything in 5 days maybe more ...they move long distances in short amounts of time so do your homework and it will pay off ...hang in there... it takes time.
Good Luck

Re: best way to hunt wolves
Brent, thanks for the reply, that is the kind of info I was after. I knew it would be hard in the timber, but that is where we have been cutting tracks. I might have to put more time into them than I thought, but they need to be shot. I will keep you on my list when questions come up. thanks

Re: best way to hunt wolves
I think tying up a dog like that would be a great idea. If everyone did it then it wouldnt be long before wolves starting associated hounds with humans. Not sure if its considered baiting or if they just happen to come up on your dogs while you're at a tree that its legal? Everyone is wolf country should try it and see what happens, maybe more hounds will be saved

Re: best way to hunt wolves
You would have to use a decent sound recording system to be able to get the same sound and loud enough for them to hear, I doubt when the first one comes in and you shoot that your dog would be in any harm but it would make more sense to use a sound recording device for the dogs safety
Re: best way to hunt wolves
Check with the ranchers in the area you want to hunt they will point you in the right direction as far where they see them or have had problems with them.
I just got to a high point and glassed I just couldn't close the distance enough in the timber to get a shot.

Get 2 wire dog crates. In one put a bitch in heat, in the other a male dog. Space em 50 feet apart and sit in a treestand and wait. The wolves should come in to investigate what all the commotion is about.

Re: best way to hunt wolves
One VERY IMPORTANT point I forgot to mention earlier..If you are lucky enough to kill a wolf or wound one...DO NOT move..stay put and wait even if you can not see the wolf you shot...It has worked for me more than once where others from the pack will come back to see what has happened to the missing wolf...watch every angle and spot you can see, keep movement to a minimum as the wolf that is comming to look is all eyes!!!!I have had them slip in 40 yards from where I was sitting!!!!!
DON't get excited...I know that's easy for me to say....wait for the best shot you have it will likely mean you getting wolves killed.
Rushing things will cost you that long awaited moment of success.
It may be an hour maybe more before they return, sometimes the pack will split and howl steady, other times they are silent but you have a 60% or better chance at a second wolf if you are patient.
It's not guarenteed but worth the time to see if it works.
Practice howling yourself as well,it may work...cant hurt to try.... I killed 2 wolves one evening 30 minutes apart by howling at the edge of a meadow about 10 -15 minutes between howls....I'm no expert at it and it paid off...we cut the ears off both like taking a scalp and got enough from the rancher to buy alot of fuel to thin a few more down till they got wise to us....
Good Luck
