You are only allowed to tag one wolf, right.Doogie wrote:good info Brent, but we are only allowed one wolf here
Re: best way to hunt wolves
one tag yes.
Re: best way to hunt wolves
Wolves are considered a big game species here in Montana...we can't use sound recordings to take them here. I have been thinking about doing the same thing, kind of.Jeff Eberle wrote:Why would you use a dog ???? Make a recording of hounds treeing then no one get hurt but the wolves I put a little more stock in my dogs then to be using them for bait
Put a coon in a cage and tie the dog so he can see it...might draw one in and even if you don't kill one they'll think twice about coming after a barking hound. It's just simple negative reinforcement stuff.

That statement never has nore will it ever apply to wolves when their number have reached what they are at now....
When you see where a pack has killed 7 deer and never fed on a single one..I call that waste.
Shoot at every wolf you see, your within the law to do so where there is a season and you have a tag.

Tagged wolf OR7 has made it to California. Hooray! Even if the new California wolf population reached numbers to where they could be legally hunted do you actually think it would happen? Hell they bearly let us hunt bear here. hahahaha. In a state that passed prop. 117, the lion ban, and has a little problem with a cougar killing a human now and again, the fur huggers would protect them just like the lion so flatlanders can go to the woods and hear a damn wolf howl. Hell maybe the wolves will kill of a few cougars first before they finish off what the cougars have started on the state's blacktail deer population. Best way to hunt one? A Blackhawk helicopter, gen 4 night vision, and a freaking mini-gun. Anyways California has now joined the club and you know what they say about wolves: smoke a pack a day. -Pete

I happen to know for a fact that North Idaho wolves love hound dog calls, both recorded and the real deal. Be ready for several to come in, or the entire pack. I would suggest carrying a rifle you can sling alot of lead with, something like an AR-15 in 308. I know of 9 that came in to a hound baying on a critter and 3 that came in to a Fox Pro with the hound call. Another good call is a pup ki-yi, primos makes a good mouth call for that. I heard of a couple guys that were successful walking ridges and just howling like a wolf with no call to get a response, then do a spot and stalk type hunt.
I'm pretty disappointed to hear hound hunters worried about how many wolves they can tag or not tag. EITHER SSS OR PACK YOUR BAGS AND GO HUG A TREE IN CALIFORNIA!

Teddy Roosevelt said, "Walk softly and carry a big stick". So, if I were to adopt the motto, shoot, shovel and shut-up, it probably wouldn't behove me to tell people (especially the antis that cruise this site) that's what I'm gonna do. I think we're all on the same page here...these wolves have cost a lot of people a lot of stuff and were all here to help combat the problem.Mackdog wrote:I happen to know for a fact that North Idaho wolves love hound dog calls, both recorded and the real deal. That statement never has nore will it ever apply to wolves when their number have reached what they are at now....

Just double checking. In NC we have a wanton waste law of some sorts.

I'm not convinced we are all on the same page. The deer and elk that feed us, bear and cat hunting with hounds and the livlihoods of outfitters and ranchers happen to be much more important to me than a minor fish and game violation. Maybe you should tell the Idaho County Sheriff to stop his SSS raffle that raised $9,600 for local elementary schools, high school grad parties and food banks.
You assume we are all on the same page but what happens when your dogs get torn to shreds by a wolf that could have been killed by someone but because you didn't stand up, explain the problem and encourage that person you just lost your pack?
Call me a dumb ignorant redneck, but I would rather know for a fact we and as many others as possible are on the same page instead of assuming it.

I believe the wanton waste law was put there to be directed at wildlife that is considered FIT for human consumption.
How many wolves are there in NC ?..non I assume
How many hounds have been killed by wolves in NC?
Wolves are responsiable for the largest reduction in wildlife and wildlife species in North America since the slaughter of the Americian Bison...they are a reintroduced species that were NOT indiginious to the US...these are CANADIAN GREY WOLVES... kill, shoot at and do what ever is Legal WITHIN the law and forget about wanton waste on a predator that has cost millions of dollars to the tax payers ranchers outfitters and people of the US and Canada that DID NOT WANT THEM..
Our grand fathers killed them off for a reason, history is repeating it's self..
Good Hunting
