Amplifier for DC 30/DC 40 Collars?
I tried to explain this idea about a year ago but I don't think I portrayed it correctly. Would it be possible to create an in-line external amp with its own power source for the garmin collars. That is, a device with a battery (3.6v lithium AA or short AA?) that would screw in in place of the VHF antenna on the collar. It could have its own shortened antenna similar to the factory antenna. There could be FCC implications, are the garmin collars limited to 2 watts by regulation or for other reasons? Just an idea that I thought would be worth looking into.

Yes, in theory would be possible. Yes, it is an FCC reg on the 2 watts.
In general though it is my opinion that this would not be practical. Really don't know of any amps small enough to fit on a collar. A whole host of problems then need to be dealt with.
Since most smaller amps are the size of a small radio. I can see it now. Dogs wearing a vest that houses an amp on one side, a battery on the other side, and a 3ft whip hanging off them.

Alright, so scratch that idea. What are the implications of using true GPS satelllite communications, like the SPOT? Is it size, battery life or cost???

SPOT GPS Satellite Communication Technology For Dog Tracking
I just looked at the SPOT devices. They last 5 days on two AA's and you can use your smart phone as a handheld, no radio communications, no VHF burnouts, track your dogs anywhere in the world! You can even send personal messages with them to a smart phone. The SPOT is cheaper than a new DC40 collar. Why aren't we using this technology???
