2 miles enough?

Post by Tree talkin »

Just curious how far you guys road your pups. I take mine for two miles almost everyday. Is that too much or not enough? They are five months old.

Thats probably fine for now but you can increase that with time. Watching your dogs should tell you how far they can do.

Becareful how long and how often you road your pups. At 5 months, the skeletal structure and cartilage in the joints is still very fragile and at risk of damage from extended running or jumping from height. It is also the same reason it is not recommended to feed puppy food past 6 months of age.......actually has too many calories and the muscle mass out-grows the skeletal system......... GOOD nutrition and too many calories are two different things.......to keep in mind.

A dog that runs on it`s own limits it`s own activity.........a dog running to keep up to a truck is compelled to keep going. 2 miles for a 5 month old is plenty.......I wouldn`t go more.

Speed is a huge factor here. 2 miles at a casual jog isn't over the top for most pups that age from quick maturing parents. Bigger dogs that's probably a bit to much. Now if these dogs are running hard the whole way to keep up or are leashed its high. I rarely exercise my dogs at a full run for extended distances. I have a variety of ages and the old and younger pups stay close while the faster dogs swing out on little loops but are pushing themselves. I haven't ran into a good hunting dog that was Lazy. Given a chance they ll stay in shape easily.

The littermate to one of your pups is roading 6 miles once a week at a trot and has trailed with the older dogs for over 15 miles through the snow several times. That one pup of yours came from some hard charging parents and I would expect the same out of her. Her sibling down in AZ is already trailing dry ground cats and fighting coons on the ground. She gets roaded at least twice a week for over 10 miles at about a 10mph pace. Just watch em and see if it looks like they are struggling to keep up. Build them up gradual on the distance.

EVERY DOG IS DIFFERENT, I USUALLY ROAD MY DOGS ONCE A WEEKEND FOR 10-12 MILES...WHEN IT COMES TO PUPS, 3-5 MONTHS I USUALLY LOAD 1 ON THE RIG AND LET THEM WATCH THE OTHER DOGS....WHEN I STOP TO PRAISE THE DOGS, I WILL GET THE PUP DOWN TO DO WHAT THEY DO... AT 6 MONTHS I BEGAN TO ALLOW THEM TO PACK IN AND ROAD FOR 1 MILE BURSTS, USUALLY 3 TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF THEIR EXCERCISE RUN... GRADUALLY OVER THEIR MATURITY I WILL RUN THEM MORE... THIS IS WHAT WORKS FOR ME
