hey guys im havin a prob. i gotta coon dog pup an he has trashed on deer before but wat i wanna no is how do i no if hes trashin or not? i gotta garmin so do deer run diff then a coon or bobcat? would appreciate watev yall got

One thing that you can try is if you are rigging, when he strikes put him on a leash and let him start to trail. If he sticks his nose in a deer track after he strikes then slap him with the leash and take him back to the truck to find something else.
I know it seems like a slow way to go but it beats having a hundred trash races a day.

when we have dogs hit a deer track it usually ends pretty quick if ur watching on your garmin a coon or cat they will follow that track a little longer than a deer cuz the deer always out run them

The best thing to do is put a shock collar on him and go deer hunting. Spot some deer in the open, pull over, unload the dog and see if he wants to run them. If he does stop him with the collar. It should not take more than a few times.

Yep, this works good for me too.

By the way, usually deer will run a circle like a rabbit only a lot bigger (usually 3/4-1 mile in diameter). If the dog goies out and comes back still barking every step, it ain't not coon, probably a deer.

I guess it depends where you hunt and what kind of terain you hunt in. For us in NW Wa. its really brush so the deer are easyier to hear running in the brush than to see. But the deer do hang out on the roads at night so we just rigg the dogs until we see one cross the road and test them for a strike, if they dont strike I will stop on the track and let them get a good wiff if they show any interesst at all I wont say a word and just turn them down until they either leave the road or bark once and then I tune them up with the shock collar. I let the dogs think the deer is the one shocking them not me and I never shock a dog on the rigg, easy way to break a dog from striking. Its kinda the same theary as a bark collar dogs figure out real fast the more I bark the more I shock.

Deer will pretty much run straight out, and straight out of the country, get gone real fast, go farther than a coon or bobcat. Usually a dog will bark every step like he is looking right at it.


put a shock collar on a dog around home for 3 or 4 days, let em get used to it, then take them and drive around till you see deer right close to you, turn you dog loose and see what he does, if he runs it, give him a shot with the shocker. If you have a tone button, its best to use it first to warn them.

Do not leave the shocker on long periods of time, it will tear their neck up and break out, and have all kinds of skin infection on their neck.

We have alot of deer around my place, I can usually go out and see one from the porch. So I let my dog run around and when I saw him take the track i hit his ass hard. Seems to have worked. Did the same thing for livestock, elk, and porcipines. As far as deer outrunning the dogs. Maybe terrain has somthing to do with it? One time Xbox trashed and took a small 2 point buck he was on his heels for 2 miles, I did not have a shocker at the time and all my screaming didnt matter. I was finally able to get ahead of him and stop him. Thats when I decided to get a shocker!
