Hounds that hang up to much on the track?

The post on over running was a great post here is one for everyone hope we get some great info on this also. I am talking the ones that hit a hot spot or make a loose and dont want to look for the exit and just hang up how do you correct this problem. Andy

Andy what do you mean by a hang up? just keep circling at a loose? i have a young hound that has done this a couple times, i helped him out with snow, but what should you do on bare ground? thanks you read my mind, good post!

i know exactly what your saying andy , when the dog goes back to the same spot over and over barks like it is right there . i cant stand it . i would also like to know how to fix this problem . the only way i know to fix it is give it away as a coon dog.

My old femail will do this some time's, It's like she's more content scenting that area than moving the track, I just scratch my head. I have even watched her start to follow the dogs moving the track and then run back for one last nose full followed by an off track beller. Ever since I watched her do this I put shock collars on all the dogs all the time. Usually a beep is all it takes to remind her where we are and what were doing. I have the same problem leaving the house when the cookie jar is full. Thanks. John.

i try hunting dog that hangs up with a drifting type dog if they wont honer the drifter when they pick it up i hit them with the tritronics after a few time if that dont cure the problem a 22 will

I have a question now for those culling those type of dogs, at what age is enought? I have a female that will flat move, good on everything but she did false tree alot early this season but hasn't in awhile now. Her sister flat ignores her and keeps trying to work the track. I, also talking old tracks nothing very fresh. I think shell get over it with some age and experience. And also on old snow. Sorry if im posting confusingly.

Only time I've had this happen is on a really old cold track...but now that I've written that I'm sure it'll happen to me more now Do you guys think they're just hanging up where they're getting the strongest scent?

unreal-tk in a situation like yours i keep the best one and can the other i want a one way track dog on a loose i want them going forward looking for the pickup no jacking the track where they have already been if they slick tree and dogs go on i shock them if they repete they dont come home ( keep the best can the rest)

Hello Al, it's good to hear about your good hunt. My season has been a little off so far also. Poor decisions on my part on two seperate occasions have almost sent me to the emergency room.(wife's questioning my judgement). But last nite I had one of those great unexpected hunts, young dogs produced 3 tree's. Two coon and a pop-up cat. To my question. You mentioned you are forsure an old school houndsmen. I know and respect this about you. I was just curious, what was it that made you mention this. I dont intend to put you on the spot and I'm sure no one will take any offence to what you have to say. Everyone on this site can benefit from your knowledge and experience. Wether they realise it right now or not. Sorry I kinda got off subject. Thank you for your time. John.
