plott+pitbull?
Re: plott+pitbull?
i have had any hounds yet but i sure have had pits and a pitbull by its self will easily kill a wolf a wolf doesnt have a high thresh hold for pain like a pit does and to all those hog hunters out there think about when a pit is shakeing up a 400lb boar for fun now think about a weak 150lb wolf
Re: plott+pitbull?
Really? C'mon guy. You don't know what you are talking about. Shouldn't post such nonsense.

Herc- You're right, pits are double tough dogs. Problem is Wolves don't play by rules, certainly not Cajun Rules...
If you had one wolf, a 16X 16 box, 3 ft tall and were washing and weighing in... The Pit should win in a scratching contest, if he makes it past the 10 minute mark.
Arguing about who's gonna win on the Mt... That's just silly!
Take care.

Re: plott+pitbull?
Load them tough dogs up, head to WI. Wolves are thick and taking down hounds left and right. We could use somebody who wants to thin them out.
Here is a link to the maps of each spot, should give you a good starting point. http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/er/mammals/w ... .htm#table
The table is all set, should be nothing to it.

Herc they are right. Show bred airedales can handle themselves against pits and those are puss's compared to the working kind. Heres the URL for proof http://traditionalairedale.proboards.co ... 226&page=1
But i got done reading a book labeled "Crossing the gates of Alaska" where a man came across an old time dogman that owned airedales. He said he once saw one of his dogs battle a lone wolf. And that the airedale was holding his own. But in the end all the slashes and finally the throat slash ended the airedale. So pits would have no chance

Re: plott+pitbull?
Pitt would definitely not be the cross someone would want for that purpose. Only thing a pitt brings to the table are gritt and stamina, something the plott already has plenty of! I would think u would want size & speed (and need lots of it). Personally pitts have never given me the impression of being unbeatable at all! My female ridgeback has encountered 2 of them since i've owned her (both males) and she whooped the living hell out of each of them. One of them was my cousins, and to this day that dog will come running out of the yard, see my dog, and turn and run back to the garage! My opinion is that a breed like the ridgeback would be better suited against a wolf. Not that it would matter. I think a good ridgeback is about as tough as they come, but i readily admit it would b no match for a big canadian grey.

This is my first post as I lost my previous login. I don't live in USA but I can offer my modest experience. Most of the topics here were on spot so maybe I will repeat some thinking.
Our wolves are as yours (CA), just little bit smaller. Most of them are about 80 lbs but some of
the examples goes up to 170 lbs. Jet in just one of the hunting areas wolves took more than 15 hunting dogs this season. In one occasion the wolf was shot while running with the dog (~40lbs) in his mouth.
Pits are great dogs, but survive the wolves at their home?! We live in surrounding where people illegally still are fighting dogs for money. 15-20 years ago pits and bulteriers were popular, but in recent years they changed to big shepherd dogs, Sharplaninec, Aziat, Kangal and similar, as it became obvious a pit is no match to mountain dog double or triple in weight! Even those are no match for wolves. I know a case where one shepherd took his ships to bath on a different direction one day. As the dogs are used to go in front of ships the first most capable dog continued in the old direction and after the first corner the shepherd heard a scream of the dog. He immediately went there just to see some hair and a lot of blood, the best dog was gone! Eaten. It's only one but exist hundred similar cases.
So Pit guys forget it, NO DOG IN THIS WORLD IS CAPABLE OF FIGHTING A WOLF! The wolf is not fighting actualy, it hunts for food! And the dogs are maybe the easiest pray. Unfortunately for us, the hunters. The hunting dog is most vulnerable, because while on a trail it invites the devil for lunch, It's blind for anything else. They are caught off guard, unprepared, they die not knowing what happened.
Something that helps in some cases here is putting a bell on the dog and maybe bright colours. It is also good if dog is familiar with wolf odour and retreats in time, faster better!
