Your best hound you ever had

My best is a bluetick named Blue he is 12 now. When he was younger he ran every track know matter the game like he could see what he was after. He is always nice around the house never ill to other hounds BIG bawl mouth with a long dying bawl locate and short bawl on tree anyone could call him. His sons and grandsons have alot of there old man in them. I wish he was 5 or 6 again but thats wishing. I have semen collected on him for years to come. He is i beleave my onces in a life time hound. I sure am going to miss the old boy when he is gone.

Hands down was a Piute Mt. Redbone I named Piute. What made him so outstanding was his brains. I never spent one day training him what to hunt or what not to hunt. He was a natural.

I'm not sure I can answer that one.
Maybe I have just been lucky to have had several outstanding hounds over the years...some had a better nose while others were better at the tree, some could move a track in conditions I would call nearly impossiable and there were those that no matter what happened you could count on them to catch a lion..
I look back and over the years and say they were all better than I could have ever hoped for.

Thats funny only three of use out of 260 guys that look at this post are the only ones with a hound that stood out from the rest of hounds.

as of now a redtick i lost last winter Trucker was a go till he treed type sometimes a pain in the ass but always ready to hunt i sure miss him he looked out of place with all my blueticks but he didnt realize it he thought he was the man oh and he was the type to never start much trash but boy them little grey fox better run for there life if another dog struck them

I AM WITH BRENT SINCLAIR. I STARTED RUNNING HOUNDS AT AGE 12. SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN MOST FORTUNATE TO HAVE HAD NUMERUS PACKS THAT HAVE MADE ME PROUD. WHEN I THINK BACK IT WOULD BE A REAL INSULT TO NAME ONE HOUND OVER SOME OTHERS. THEY EACH DID THEIR THING IN THEIR OWN TIME AND LOOKED PRETTY GOOD. I COULD NAME HALF A DOZEN THAT REALLY STOOD OUT AND I CAN NOT REMEMBER THE NAMES OF THE HUNDRED WHO DID NOT. WHEN I THINK OF OTHER FELLAS PACKS THAT I HAVE HUNTED WITH THERE HAVE BEEN SOME TRULY OUTSTANDING HOUNDS. ALOT THAT I WOULD HAVE BEEN PROUD TO LEAD AND FEED.

I also have to go with Brent. When I first started trying to figure out this lion hunting, I was fortunate enough to get hold of a dog that was far better than I could understand at the time. His name was Cuervo, and he was more hound that I had any business owning at that stage.
Some of the most recent hounds that stand out above the norm were Derrick - he was given to me as a pup. He led my pack that got me back to hunting lions after several years without dogs. Trip - also given to me at the same time as Derrick. She was probably the absolute locator I'll ever own. Toad - HELL ON WHEELS!! A natural! I never had to break her from trash. All she EVER wanted was to catch felines. By a year and a half, she was a finished dog. Toad died of cancer at 3 years.
Today I am priveledged to hunt with Baldy, Dora, Cougar, and several others, including one of my next big hopefuls - Clyde.

OK Dean, I'll admit I cheated and had a card up my sleeve....
There were a couple hounds I have owned that like you and the other fellas say had something that stood out above the others.
Ol Dan...was one of those hounds, and I am hoping his pups Sam and Mader fill in that void spot in the pack which they are doing a good job of at this point.
This is Ol Judy, I got her from Dan Lay as an 8 week old pup 22 yrs ago in 1990
She died at 9 ....she would not leave a treed lion EVER..
She found a big wind fall pine and curled up under it till we got there on a lion .....cold and plumb wore out, my son Tanner took his coat and covered her, and got her warmed up then we walked back to the Land Cruiser.

I would have to say my Piute Mtn Redbones sired by Switzer's Charlie were my all time favorites Sandy, Scarlett, and Ozzy. Sandy was my favorite when I had her until she passed. I was lucky enough to get her littermate Scarlett not too long after Sandy died and she became my favorite in my pack. Now, I have Ozzy back and he is my favorite. There is just something in this breeding that compares to no other. Like Dean said in his post about his Piute Mtn Redbone, they are just smart and natural. Their temperments cannot be beat. Just good all around dogs. That being said I have to say that I have an up and coming hound, Puma, I got from Benny that is pretty remarkable and the most natural trail and tree hound I have seen in a long time. She has been all business since I have had her at 3 months old. She is my little superstar.

I'll play, havent been around near as long as most, wish I started earlier but this is my top dog Harlo in the blue collar.
Despite a rookie myself not long ago how he (they) powered through my mistakes to do what they do now gives me the utmost appreciation and respect for them.
From near drownings, falls, broken bones, bit, swatted, nearly died of heat exhaustion coupled with internal injuries, puking pissing blood from from a mean sow the same day (but still had to be pulled off track, alone) he's never quit, always been first out of the truck, whether it be striking or starting a track and has finished many alone or was the last to let me "catch him" while still going.
I've put him on quite a few that couldn't be started, too old, raining too hard and "we'll never catch it but lets listen to them bark anyways" and ended up treed.
He's only 3.5 and has given me a lot of priceless memories in these short years, I'll be lucky but happy to get 3.5 more.
Some people would call him a cull I'm sure, I don't have much to compare to.







He's doing a damn fine job training his apprentice on the far right, 2 in May, whom I have high hopes for.
Here is my crew with a beauty tom my brother took over them this winter that was 36-48hrs ahead of us, holed up in a swamp below a SE slope/burn with elk all through the area.
