growley dogs
growley dogs
I was just trying to get some input on growly dogs. I have had a dog for a couple weeks that I am trying to break of it. It only seems to be around New dogs. I have had a couple fights and I don't want it to hurt someone else's dog. I just don't want a fight somewhere I can't beak it up before I get there. Can this ever really be broke?

Re: growley dogs
How old? If he's young, you could try to cut him. If he's much over a year old, probably won't help. What are you doing to try to break him of it?
Don't buy the hype.

Things like thes are like a cancer end it quick or cull him because it will spread though the rest of your dogs.

Re: growley dogs
I have seen dogs that were 5 and up to 7 years old , several that were cut this late and most it still helps it is not a 100% cure even with cutting young but at least 80-90% it helps .

Re: growley dogs
I got a 3 year old that w as very growly towards other dogs and even me at times. Had enough of him when he snapped at me due to a dog in heat. Had him castrated and now he is the friendliest dog I got and decided he wanted to hunt instead of chasing tail and growlin at other dogs. Best thing I ever did for that dog cause he was fixin to take a nap. Don't know if it always works but can't hurt.
Re: growley dogs
I appreciate all the input. Anymore would be great the dog is a three year old uncut redtick. I really like the dog and would like to keep him. Not sure if anyone had a good solution.

Re: growley dogs
You can try cutting him. If it does not stop 100% cull him. JMO I do not tolerate a growly dog!! Cut or uncut! Like someone else said, it will spread. I am the only dog in the pack that is allowed to growl.
Re: growley dogs
Yep growly dogs can ruin a pack.
I had a hunting partner that had male trig walker cross that was men as hell. I didnt know the dog was growly until He got inside my box and bit half the ear off my redbone. My huntin partner at the time refused to cull his dog and about a month latter that male killed a 12 month old pup by grabing him through the kennel and completely chewed that pups leg off. To say the least I never hunted with the dog or the dogs owner again. The dog never did get culled they kept him around for a field trail dog, they just cut his nuts off and siad he was better. BUll$H!T when hound get mean take it to the vet and put it down, cutting the nuts off is like 1in10 chance the dog will calm down. And then after its cut do ever really trust that dog not to fight?

Re: growley dogs
There is a big difference between a growly dog and a mean dog. Most of my dogs were some what growly when a strange dog got put into the box or brought home to the kennel. Most of the guys I have hunted with had dogs that would get a little growly with a new dog. There is a certain amount of BS that goes on when a new dog is entered into a pack, it is just part of establishing pecking order. My male dogs would get in little spats on occasion, my females would have a knock down drag out brawl about once a year. Usually over food or a certain spot in a dog house or the box.
It wasn't to the point of dogs getting injured. I am not saying put up with it because if the dog is starting fights it should go. But a growl when a new dog is brought to the kennel or box is a lot different than killing pups. There is also a bit of difference between a growl in the box and a fight at a tree. I don't put up with fights, but a growl to let the new dog to stay away is how dogs communicate.

Re: growley dogs
Get about 5 new dogs.
Put growly dog in a small box.
Put new dog in the box.
Shock growly dog three 8 second interval. (trashbreaker)
Do this twice a day for 7 days.
If he growls after that treatment, give him to your mother-in-law

Re: growley dogs
Cut him, absolutly 100% cut him. IMO every male hound (unless kept for a stud) should be cut. There isn't any cocking leg to piss on bush to mark territory, growling or profiling to be dominate male. All they think about is catching game. I have even hunted them with females coming in or going out of heat and never had a problem. In your situation, You should definatly cut him and give it a chance before culling him. It can sometimes take up to 6 months to have full effect on settling him down. I have found that there is a fine line in some breeds between being gritty on a Bear's a$$ and a little growly in the box when they are tired. Some of it you just have to tolerate and stay on top of to make sure it doesn't progress into anything more.
On the other hand a straight up mean dog that would rather fight at a tree instead of focusing on the game he chased up it, deserves nothing more than to be put down. Keep in mind that there are alot of common sense factors to all of this. Such as accidently having a female in heat with you. you're going to have problems with un-cut males. I'm sure you will get alot of different opinions on this, but here is mine. Hope it helps.

Reading thru the posts on this topic, most everyone is talking about castrating your dog. I'm sure not saying this want work, probably will. I have had two castrated dogs myself thru the years (castrated before I got them). Never had any problem with them or any of the other male dogs that I have owned thru the years. But no one has mentioned a good butt whipping. The GOOD BOOK says "don't spare the rod" referring to discipline to our children. I have always believed in this and also use the same principle on my dogs, seems to work on them as well. Why is our dogs going to mind us, if they don't know who the boss is and the consequences if they don't mind? So...the next time he growls at another dog after he has been scolded once maybe twice and he doesn't listen to you, get you a good stiff, doubled nylon rope and explain the situation to him. He's got to have a little fear of the boss, otherwise your not in control. Just something else to ponder on. Good luck with your dog.

Re: growley dogs
well kicking their ass may work, if they are treed a ways back in the woods and you cant get to them it might not be just the problem dog involved, we all say we have a "pack" well they think the same way, if one of their members are in a scrape they are going to pile on, im not saying dont give the dog the opportunity to change just dont put all your eggs in one baskett over it stopping the aggressive behavior, learned the hard way, sometimes you just have to do what you have to do, as said before fighters are a cancer that should be delt with asap.... Is the problem dog made, man made, or is it just him? I think that has alot to do with wether your going to get the problem taken care of or not. Theres some good onfo that has been given to you. Take advantage of it.
