2012 lion season coming to a end

Post by ol'red »

Well our season here in new Mexico is coming to a end we have had a bad snow season all year or not as much as we are use to but some how managed to catch 15 lions with the help of my brother of course.well this weekend was calling for snow just didn't know how much .we were not counting on much being that evertime the weather man said it was going to snow it wouldn't snow the weekend before this weekend we even had to make a hunting trip to Utah with our good friend jared where we had a awsem weekend getting into cats everywhere we went .so on Tuesday I get a call from a friend from north Carolina saying they were in Wyoming hunting lions which they had never done them selves or thair dogs so I checked on them all weekend with no luck on catching or finding lions so I heard that we might get snow so I invited them to come out so they made a 9 hour drive out to new Mexico getting to new Mexico around 10 Thursday night . We left my place around 3 Friday morning in search of snow and lions so we got to our destination around 5 after driving all day in a blizzard and lil sleep it was s long day and not cutting any tracks made it even longer hopeing Saturday would be the day we could get on a cat well we get up bright and early and cut roads finally I see a track and the race is on I drooped 4 of my best and off they go well the track was covered in and dogs still took it really well the dogs were about 2 miles away according to gps and they fall treed .well while getting to the tree I smell a skunk and yrs they were not treed they were finishing what was left of the skunk so I pull the stinky dogs off and line them out again and the race was on again like a mile down they break a herd of wild pigs let me say that if thair was anything that could go wrong did .so we finally gather dogs back up and a god friend Daniel comes to give us a hand well back into the woods we go finding the track once again this time we turn 6 dogs lose and they haul ass like they were on the cats ass no they were chafing eachother after yelling and shocking dogs I get my 2 year old houndenm blue tic back and line him out again well he had hurt fillings from me shocking him a time or 2 well that changed real quick once he lined the track out and in about 20 min we would be liking at a lib in a tree .finally the dogs started Treeing after hearing my blue dog Treeing . All and all it was a good day my friends from north Carolina got to see a lion in a tree and made me thankfull for my shock collars special thanks to the guys that gave me a hand on this hunt Daniel ,Roy,Travis, and,Joe hope it was as much fun for u guys as it was for me until the next chace

Thats quite the race... 15 Lions and they're still trashing on anything that crosses their path, sounds like quite the handful.

I woulda beat that houndnem bluetic off the lion and put him back on the pigs! sounds like an awesome adventure. I saw that dog trail a lion on a dry slope for a couple miles last week. lucky we didn't run onto any deer or pigs.

I'd like to thank the Medina brothers for taking me in and teaching me about hunting lions. Without them I don't think my dogs and I would have seen any action at all this year. I've learned more in the couple times they came down and hunted than I think I could've learned in a few years going at it alone. These guys are truly stand up individuals and I'm very thankful to have a friendship with them. I wish Jesse would have played hooky from work to be there this weekend too. Being responsible sucks. It was also a pleasure to meet and hunt with the North Carolina boys Travis and Joe. Here are a few pictures from this last weekend on this same tom.

That pack of misfits are a handful but if I was a betting man any hound hunter would love to have them in there pack. They prob caught more game than most ppl so don't knock em till u see them hunt! DirtyDan it sure does suck to have bills piling u, and thanks for the kind words hell of a partner in my book. Houndem u would whoop that tic off the lion for a pig wouldn't u lol....

Ol Red, What do you think my dogs do when they run accross a deer in the woods??? Not a single trash race in over twelve years since I started conditioning my dogs to elk and deer. If your dogs are trashing, your not training them right!

FullCry, if we were to trash break all our dogs like that we would have an entire zoo in our kennels. We would need a deer, elk, antelope, barbary sheep, hog, javalina, and lots of little critters like skunks, ground hogs, squirrels, porcupines and rabbits. That would be quite the petting zoo.

And to everyone else who can only get out of this post that ol red has trashy dogs you are wrong. For one hogs aren't exactly trash when we let our dogs run them in the summer and for two out of fifteen lions only getting involved in one or two races with off game isn't that bad. It's a crying shame that all people can get out of this post is the negative things. Why isn't anyone congratulating him for catching 15 lions or for his young Stomper dog catching this one alone. Sorry ol red I guess your dogs are just a bunch of trash cans. I guess catching 15 lions makes you suck. I guess you should send that bluetick back to Houndnem hog dogs for a refund.

Actually I didn't think that at all. I used to run hogs with my dogs also, so I sure wouldn't think that running one would be a trash race. What I was responding to was his comment "anyone that says thair dogs never trash are prb never in the woods that much". That statment is just not true and tells me he uses the same worthless methods that are taught in every book ever written about trash breaking hounds. Its hard to believe that none of those methods work 100% but they are still the tried and true methods everyone still uses. I would suggest to everyone that does have trash problems to maybe look a bit beyond those methods and maybe find something else that might work better. I did 12 years ago and what I found has been 100% effective.
And what's wrong with a zoo? I've also got a bunch of chickens up with my dogs now. They (the dogs) have proven to be great watchdogs for my girls. I've lost one chicken so far this year to a fox. It happened one day when I had all the dogs out hunting and came home to find a missing hen. When I posted a picture of the dogs and chickens together about 9 months ago, someone on here said I'd have a bunch of dead chickens in a week. Conditioning! Or what ever you want to call it, give it a try.

I agree, Ol Red, don't take my post the wrong way. It sounds like you've had a good year. I'm just always trying to get guys to think outside the box. There's so much bad information out there when it comes to hounds and training methods.
