i do to but seem my dogs love them.
Re: I hate porcupines
I heard if you cut off the end of the quills a little bit (not alot) helps them breath for easier removal. If any other tips are out there, I would love to hear. This is bound to happen to me sometime.

My only advice is to get at least 3 guys to help. 2 holding the dog down, 1 pulling quills with pliers. Check the inside of the mouth real good. I dont think cutting the ends helps at all.Unreal_tk wrote:I heard if you cut off the end of the quills a little bit (not alot) helps them breath for easier removal. Unreal is right. It is called blunting the quills an by doing this you release the air out of them and they are easier to pull. 3 years ago I had a dog get into a baby porky and that sucked. I'm 6'4 275 and that 45lb dog threw me off her like I was a paper weight. Good luck

Re: I hate porcupines
I found that using athletic tape to tape the front legs together and the back legs together and then the mouth shut when you can makes pulling quills alot easier. Done it a time or two-many.
Re: I hate porcupines
Tom A unfortunately I've had a fair bit of experience with quills and my dogs were the same color
sdred you are right about the tape I used duct tape on legs and a stick or piece of broom handle across the mouth to hold it open will save your hands some and yes you will need help.
I've never found cutting the quills helped. Maybe wrong but while you're trying to cut them you could pull them out. Good luck!

tape the back legs together , then the front together . lay the dog on your tailgate , tie the back legs to the one end of the tail gate and the front to the other. if you have some one to help hold the head it is a big help. needle nose pliers are a must. dont bother cutting them, by the time u cut them u will be done pulling them . DONT pull the ones in the nose untill the very end. this is your quill lesson of the day .
back in the day when we had beardogs we would get those s.o.bes 2 or 3 times a year . one time my dad had a couple young males that finished out to be great dogs but they were far from it this day. he was hunting and ran into Al Baldwin . they ended up coldtrailing a cat when my dads knot heads found a porky. Als dogs went on to tree the cat . bet that wasnt enbarressing.

Thanks for all the replies. What happens if you miss a quill or it breaks off? Is it bad like a foxtail? Does it fester so you can find it later and squeeze it out? THANKS TOM A.

They just dig deeper, sometimes they can kill a dog if you miss one, according to the ol boy who educated me on porkys.
Re: I hate porcupines
The quicker you get to taking them out the easier they come out. We have very few porcupines around here anymore. There was a time I carried pliers in my pocket all the time that I was hunting. Not that my broke dogs ever got into one!!! Dewey

Re: I hate porcupines
Cutting tips off does make it slightly easier. Make sure you get them all inside the mouth. They do travel and get nasty. If you know how to hold a dog down correctly, it should only take 2 people. I've helped pull them out of a freinds dogs (repeat offenders) Mine all came back to the truck (and they'd never seen one) but I got them all out and let them get a good look at it and some electricity after they watched the other dogs getting quills pulled.
