all so new

Post by youngduke »

hello im very new to utah and i have a hound pup he is 6 months old and doing very very well. Me being new to hound hunting and utah i know none of the area and need a little help with my pup all he has ever seen is coons but he knows what to do he has been ran with older dogs before and ran into a tree that was some distance in. but being new to utah i would really like to get him into cats (lions/bobcats) i will drive where ever i need to just to learn. its hard being new to all of this and not knowing anyone down here so please help. he knows what to do with coons just never had anything to do with cats except a barn cat but that was just him seeing it and chasing it into a tree. Please send me a message if you would think about helping out the new guy. Thanks

Chasing that barn cat is probably the best training you can do with a pup. A piece of lion or bobcat hide is by far the best for working on trailing and treeing around the yard. The only way to get to know that land is to get out and see it. Other than that, hunt, hunt, hunt and hunt some more!

Try a taxidermy shop or local fur buyer. They might sell you a raw hide that has a bunch of holes in it something. Its worth a try. The bottled scent doesn't do much for a dog that has already been hunting. If it were me, I'd rather spend the $25 on a chunk of raw hide.

Try to get out and meet people, hound hunters tend to be hard to get to know but if you have an area you are familiar with they might go hunt it with you. If you have hunted coons in WA I would bet money that your dog has come across a shortail at some point in time, maybe even a lion. All you have to do is let it know that cats are good game and encourage it.
