Story
Ok, I thinkI got it now. I went out to Utah with my brother and two other friends two weeks ago. I ran with Loyd Nielson of Blanding Utah (Sunrise Outfitting). AWSOME! Thats the only way to describe the trip. We hunted seven days, and took this lion on the seventh day at 1:30 in the afternoon. We cold trailed lions for days in a row, into deep canyons, up the other side, and back down again. It was the most physically challenging hunt I have ever been on. When the good Lord made the earth, he needed a place for a rock garden, he he said "Utah will do". Loyds Dogs worked as hard if not harder than any Ive seen. My Brother myself and the other two followed the dogs step for step for seven days, at one point actually having to rope the dogs up out of a canyon and back on top. After two minutes with Loyd and his brother leroy, I knew they were good peope, houndsman to the core, I felt like a life long friend and I had new them all my life. The conditions were the worst you could ask for, frozen solid at night, and thaw into mud during the day. I watched those dogs cold trail a big tom who's track was frozen in the mud from the night before. We treed a small tom that we let go on Tuesday, caught this cat on Sunday in the rocks. I have more pictures and I will try and post some. If you are a houndsman who runs bears in the east, you owe it to yourself to go West just once and run a lion on dry ground, you will never forget it!

Cat Track, I did not bring any dogs with me. To be honest, I don't think they would have fared well. Don't get me wrong we catch plenty of bears with em, but cats on dry gound, in and around those canyons, I think they would be lost. They are not bred or trained for all the cold trailing, and the first real rock outcrop, or canyon wall, they would be treed righ there. Just my 2 cents.

Steve, that Dozer dog has a nose you read about, and climbs like a monkey. For a big dog, he had no problem climbing in and out of those canyons. At one point he trailed out onto a lip about six inches wide for about 100 feet, with a sheer drop of several hundred feet below, without a care.
Mike that San Jaun Valley area (the four corners) is a neat place. Hard to explain or show true justice in the pictures, you have to see it for yourself.

Well Steve, I can't comment on the parents, all I know is what I saw. For a young dog he did superb. I wathced him and another dog start a track that the other dogs had already blown out on. Me Loyd and my brother took a straight line across the top of the rim to the dogs in the lead. Dozer ran that track and made it to the tree before we did. I also wathced him work several cold tracks, and the one I eventually took. He ran with the older dogs step for step, climbing into places you couldn't think possible. The only small fault might be a little extra mouth, but I think he will come out of that, he's still young and gets excited.
Jason, I had the time of my life, and I can't say it enough, if you ever get the chance you have to go run a lion. Your a houndman, you have read about it, imagined it, and won't be satisfied untill you do. Pay for it, swap a hunt, whatever you have to do. I felt like the houndman of old, trasping from canyon to canyon, through indian ruins, you name it chasing a lion.

Thank you so much for the honest assesment of the Pup, its always helpful for the Next breeding Move.. His Father was like a hair trigger with his Mouth but at around 18 months he begain to hold his lip a little better..
Now if Lloyd can keep him from Falling off some Cliff he should be in good shape for a good long time..
Thanks again and it sounds like you had a hunt of a life time.. Or aleast 3 or 4 years.. I sure Wish Lloyd would start a Web Site he could really show some nice areas..
Well Lloyd Call and Said He Does !! www.sunriseoutfitting.com
