Introducing Hounds and Horses/Mules

Post by ALEX »

How do you all that hunt off horses or mules go about introducing hounds and stock to eachother? Say, introducing a hound that's never been around horses before or vice versa? How difficult is it to reach the point where both hound and horse can accept each other and do their respective jobs (hunting & packing) alongside one another?

Alex, i don't think there is any real secret. just expose them. i can tell ya that it is not a good idea to do it in the pens that you keep the stock in. more so with mules than horses. as they tend to be a little territorial. and unless you're a pretty good hand i would make their first get together with the horse or mule on a lead. you will be suprised it is really not that big of a deal. if your stock is really good on the outside, and you have a good handle on the hounds. it goes very quickly. take care and good luck!

I just load up a couple of my dogs that are old hands at the game and bring the new dog along. Between them and my mule the new dog catches on quick. I never bring a dog in the corrals. My dogs can lay under my mules for shade when hunting, walk under them etc. But when they are in there corral dogs are not welcome.
