I had a female that had brindle and buckskin in her litter plus a couple black and tan. I hate to say it but a few of those buckskin looking pups are nasty on whatever game you put them on. Then turn around in the morning and work the ranch. I just don't get how they can vary so much in weight. I have one gyp that is 50lbs and her brother is a whopping 95lbs. It don't make sense. My brindles though are just as nasty, to game. I wouldn't trade any of my pups. They do right by me daily.

People have beaten in the ground for years how or why different colors emerge from breeding. I haven't been around that long, but I have seen several litters of Plott pups born. I can tell you that we had a litter to which both dam and sire were dark brindle, which had two buckskin pups that looked nothing alike. The male pup was the standard fawn color all over buckskin, that most are accustomed to seeing. The female pup was more of redish brown tint with black on her face. From a distance she looks like a black mouth cur. I can also tell you that same female has had two litters of pups and every dog out of every litter has been brindle with no white. On a seperate, unrelated cross we have seen a nearly solid black male bred to a dark brindle female, and three of the pups were buckskin. Most of the pups had white on the chese and feet and one of them had the same reddish brown tint on its back. I have a good friend that just had a litter of pups a couple weeks ago. His dogs have been UKC registered as long as you can go back. He said one of his pups was buckskin, and didn't know what to do about registering them. For those who think UKC Plotts are the only ones that are pure bred, you may find your self with a litter you can't register. We support the WTDA. They are the only breed registry that will stand behind the APA and they recognize the true breed standard for Plotts.
