Need info on handheld radios, two ways.
My father in law uses uniden they seem to work pretty well as far as range and in deep canyons, but everything i see seems like there easily 100+ a piece. Are there other radios you guys use? In the rough deep stuff. This is my first year running my own dogs so I wanna two good radios. Also where do you buy your radio's online, a sports store. Any info would be awesome.

Re: Need info on handheld radios, two ways.
Are you talking about 2 meter ham radios or cb radios. Either can cost around a hundred with a lot of 2 meter rigs going for 3-4 hundred. You can usually snatch a deal on craigslist, ebay and sometimes here in the classified section. The ham radios will give you the most power without a separate amp, but no radio works well in deep canyons. I use an Yaseu 2 meter ham radio in my truck.

Will these radios hurt the astro trackers?

All the handhelds are 5 watt max and 1 seems to work as well as the next. Mike

yea marine band is a vhf freq like ham's except it's set in a certain bandwith, vhf is a line of sight band so deep canyons and heavy timber cut the range quite a bit,but they are way better than cb's or frs/gmrs

No the astros run off gps signal, not vhf radio freq.super white hunter wrote:Will these radios hurt the astro trackers?
Re: Need info on handheld radios, two ways.
the hand held vhf radios won't hurt the astros, but you have to watch the vhf truck radios they reach out futher yet and theres certain frequences that if the radio is set too high or too low it will screw the astro up if you have it too close to it. we get our radios from used-radio.com in colorado, real good service you can get two used radios for $140 they are refurbished just like they do with cell phones. they look as good as new when you get them.

Hey thank you shooter. Your link worked for me. I guess it was the www. part before the used-radios.com. I copy and pasted the site that nywalkers posted above and it goes to a german ham radio site. Who woulda thunk. Thanks again.

This information is absolutely FALSE!!! The garmin uses the Murs band 151, and 154 channels to transmit the collar information to the the handheld.
One must be careful about what your are doing. Use of marine channels although a very common practice is illegal. Carries a very hefty fine if you get caught. Much higher than if you were to shoot a wolf.
Still there are many good radios out there. All like any land based communications will be dictated by line of sight. There are a lot of foreign radios available on Ebay that do not require you to modify the radio for use on other channels. Mind you though. These radios are not FCC approved. So you do run the chance of your order being confiscated by customs. Rare but it does happen.
