Agree'd, but while your doin that see if you can find someone local that you mite hit it off with. The easiest way is to have a old dog teach your youngsters. If that isn't an option you have to start from scratch. This is the best way as you will know what YOUR dogs will be doin. You may get with someone who has trashy dogs thus so will you. Its easier to break them at the start then after they have done it a few times without you knowing. You will need cat scent(cronks makes some and someone else mite know of some better stuff) and somethin to put in a tree after they get to trailin they need to see somethin in the tree @ the end of the trail. So thats pretty vague I know but to go into detail I would be writting a book. Like the previous comment read read and read some more. You will need to wait untill they are ready. You will know this after trying to run a drag (a drag is somethin soaked in a scent and you tie a rope around it and drag it around for them to smell and trail) a few times. Pretty soon they will trail it further and further. Once they get the hang of that you will hang the scent along with a coon preferably the family house cat in the tree by a rope so that you can lower it and then raise it up as to get them more excited and to start treein harder. I mean to hang the cat or coon in a cage in the tree by a rope not just the animal(bunnies huggers would love to hear that) hehehe. So anyway after they are doin that well you will need to get a coon or whatever you'll be hunting and turn it loose and let them trail and tree it. First let the pups go right after you turn it loose so as they can watch it then wait longer and longer. Untill they are treein it after it has been gone quite awhile. You will have to remember that scent disapates rapidly in the heat so dont get upset if sometimes they cant find and tree it, it may just be the conditions head humidity etc. Hope this helps
The long bawl in early fall, the steady chop, the hammer drop. The chase and the tree, the passion of hunting for you and me. The old dog and the pup, the juvenile thats always corrupt. The snow the rain the laughter and pain. These dogs called hounds, we chase through the brush, waiting for the tree, our next big rush.
