needing a little bit of guidance
So recently my dog has started to run trash, he is only seven months old and not running with any other dogs, he has treed coons flawlessly his first three outings and now will blow past a fresh coon track at any smell of a deer or antelope, i will be training him on cats soon so i need to get him broke quick, been looking at the astro combo collar but its a little out of my price range so if anyone has something used that will work good at least a 1 mile range or so id be interested in a price, and also need some suggestions on a book or video on the right way to go about it all, thanks for the time in advance.

At that age you do not need him broke. You need to teach him to come when called. If you hammer him hard trying to break him you can set him back a long ways or worst at that age, depending on the pup and what breed he is. If he is hard headed it won't effect him as bad. Dewey

Re: needing a little bit of guidance
thats kind of what i was wondering, he's a great dog and showing great potential i just don't wasn't to hinder more than help. He's a cameron/smokey cross blue tick and can be very hard headed but also is very good tempered, and listens very well when not chasing.
Re: needing a little bit of guidance
if you get a shock collar try to get one with different levels of stimulation so you can start and hopefully stay at a low setting. adjust the levels to the dog not your emotions .just letting them run trash all the time isnt good for them either in my opinion .it also is hard to find hunting partners who want a dog that runs everything in the woods along .hunt them with good company if at all possible . it is alot easier to say you dont need to shock a dog when you have a pack of veteran hounds to run a trashy pup with to straighten him out . i had better acting hounds when i used my shocker more. im getting softer i admit
i would blow the dust off that sucker if i had consistent trash problems though.
