Had great hunt Saturday afternoon and night in Oklahoma with Ceb from Hodgen, OK. His country is tough and rough with lots of steep grades, heavy brush, clear cuts, briars, etc.--you get the picture!
Hounds have to earn their cat here!
Sue earned her keep on the first cat, when she winded track from road where we were "roading". She struck about 75 yards off of road and Ceb and I bailed to turn other dogs in on race. Just as the other dogs started down road to Sue, the cat ran across road in front of all of them! The race was on from that point until they caught him in a small creek.
Could not have happened better for my young hounds. Let me stop here and explain that two of the 10 month old females had only been on 5-6 races with no catches or trees. One of them was even losing interest and when the other hounds would be just trailing a track, she would come back to truck. Well that all changed after this race and catch! They stayed to the end, and went all the rest of the night when we struck other tracks(3 more total).
All of my pack is aged from 10 months up to 3.5 years old, with most of them around the 18 months to 2 years old.
They are Running Walker & Trigg Hounds, mixed with some Bluetick and Treeing Walker. Most all will locate and tree, even in those tall pine trees that we have in SE Oklahoma. Ceb and I treed two last week on two different nights in same area.
Just as hounds were getting one of the tracks started good, the coyotes came in and faced barked, with jumping on one of the females. Went with in 100 yards of the ruckus, shouting at them to get away. They finally broke off, leaving my hounds alone, but that screwed up that race! Taking predator call and rifle this next week and try thinning them down a bit!
Enjoy the photo!
