Whats wrong with people?
One of the higher ups in a major timber company of western oregon does a little trapping every winter. He had a bobcat trap set up Goodman Creek off of hi way 58 on federal ground. He checked his traps last nite and had caught a cat. But some hound hunter had come along and turned out on it! Then stole it! I work for this company and they have entertained the possibility of using hounds for spring bear damage. Probably not any more!!!! If you cant catch a cat with your dogs without stealing one out of a trap do yourself and the rest of us a favor and get out of the hound hunting. We don't need this kinda shit going on this day and age. Take up golf or some other sport that isn't so controversial.

that is deffintly a black eye for all of us. Timm Pittman trailed a cat to a trap i believe last year. he left a note explaining what happened with his phone number in a zip lock bag . he also left the cat . that is a class act .

Re: Whats wrong with people?
Just had a drink with a local area trapper, got to talking about a box set i found today trailing a cat, this trap had a dead mink in it, nobody had been there for many, many weeks! After conversation and a few we figured out it was his set. I told him where his mink was and that I threw it back in his bucket for him out of respect.
I know we all need to respect each other, and I would never try to take somebodys hobby or heritage from them but leaving traps for that long is wrong.

Someone was robbing trapper Wayne a couple years ago in your neck of the woods, Mark. Truly sad.

Re: Whats wrong with people?
What a crock!
I turned out on a clean track two winters ago and treed a cat just two hundred yards off the road that walked right into a trap, same one that made the tracks into the trap, the cat belonged to the trapper not me....
Luckily the guy had twenty feet of wire for the cat to hook a tree and the dogs didn't kill the cat. We left it in the tree....I had dog tracks all over and like Tim, left a cell phone number on the ground on the trail in by the set...The guy was from Springfield Or, he called and I didn't know what to expect.
The guy ended up being a darn nice guy with as much right to trap as we have to hunt our hounds....He asked me why I wasn't like the other hound hunters who find his traps, Joben was his name, he said all the other times he has his traps stolen and if they have a bobcat in them, they are stolen as well....
Pretty good reason for a trapper to not want to return a lost hound.....Here is my point to this....Behind the scene, I hark on those foresters pretty hard for snaring bears and this gives them plenty of ammo to use against all of us.....Pretty well shuts us down I'd say....We wonder why we are in the mess we are in with our hound hunting?
Why snares instead of hounds for bear in western Oregon? snares don't bust locks and vandalize privately owned timber lands and steal trapped game like a few select hound hunters. It only takes one bad apple....
A select few just don't get it, THIS IS WHY ODFW USES USDA HIRED HOUNDS FOR COUGAR AND USDA WITH SNARES FOR BEAR INSTEAD OF YOU AND YOUR HOUNDS!

Hey Mark ,sounds like we have another dog runner with no respect for another mans stuff!!!!! Hope he don't ruin it for everyone else.
Re: Whats wrong with people?
We are our own worst enemy ! Is it any wonder that we can't get organized as a group and stand together against the anti's, or get any other hunting or trapping groups to stand with us.

Re: Whats wrong with people?
I don't see eye to eye with our Head Administrator Ronald Anglin with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.....This is exactly what he is talking about with trust issues with Oregon Hound hunters....He claims we are all this way....I don't think so, but who is to say. They do make a good argument, I bet he hears all about this and even though it is only an isolated case, it sure does us no justice....Word spreads fast with this stuff....Of all the trappers you could steal from this is like robbing a cop!
I Don't blame them for telling us to take a hike....Sorry guys, when I have no ammo to fire back, I'm done fighting the battles and calling them out...We are in a position with cougar legislation pending in February and can't even get the interest of Oregon hound hunters and only a select few are willing to send emails to Salem to fight for our rights.....So you get USDA funded by your dollars....
The State Government (odfw) Needs your money to keep Hiring the Federal Government (usda) to do your hunting and they have no problem explaining what happens to our Oregon State representatives when they give us an inch, we take a mile....Trust this, Anglin will get to my District Representative as she works hard to roll our cougar legislation and shut us down, backed by facts just like our gun rights are beginning to take a beating in America, Anglin will use this as his "classic" example why he can only trust the Federal Government to do the management hunting in Oregon.
Too bad most don't have the history to understand how and why our hunting is what it is today. Sadly we can't give you thirty or forty years of history of past hound hunting in Oregon....The current situation has evolved over many decades and reminds me of our Administration. Anglin is like Barack Obama who hates your guns, the only difference is it is hounds in Oregon with Anglin. I know there are those who disagree with my analogy. What is Ronald Anglin? He is an employee of the State Government, need i say more?
We are facing some rough sailing in all States. Government just doesn't care about you or me....
Most of the time I'm not looking to choose words like I should be using....Sorry if I offend you. I'm a hound hunter first and activist second, the second is driven by my passion for the first and if not for the love of hounds, hunting the right to bear arms, I sure as hell would not be fighting the law makers in Salem....Lets try and not give them one more reason to keep us on the side lines and shut down!
This one is personal to me, words do no justice to my outrage! I have made a case over the last three years to eliminate snares for management, working my ass off to get YOU back on board using hounds to control black bears during the critical spring months. once I got rolling what does a local hound hunter do? Steals some Government snares on private timber lands and who do you think takes the hit over that one? Your first guess is wrong and the right answer is, ALL OF US! You Central and Eastern Oregon guys probably knew nothing about snares prior to me going after them.....We don't gain any ground by stealing traps and snares from Government employees, Our argument must be fought and won in Salem.

Re: Whats wrong with people?
Got to agree taking the cat was totally wrong but on the flip side like blazenbrat said not checking sets is totally wrong also have guys in this area putting out hundreds of snares and then leaving them up all year! How in the heck can one justify putting that many sets out and then think they can remember where they all are! They dont, thats why they just leave them! jmo Andy
The home of TOPPER AGAIN bred biggame hounds.
Re: Whats wrong with people?
Stealing out of someones trap is just plain wrong, even if you dislike that person and I dont know how someone could feel "good" about claiming someone else's prize.
I know this is off topic but, I Honestly wish they would just ban the use of snares in MT. I have seen a dog caught in one and had I not been standing walking just a few yards away, that dog would have most likely died. I have found a few snares while out trailing cats after the quota has been full that were still set, these were quite a ways off the beaten path.....A couple of them looking as if they had been set for a couple years, being very weathered looking and rusty on the sliding part. There is also the issue of catching game you dont desire, such as lions. I have learned of a couple over the past few years that perished in snares and its just rediculous. Apparently that supposed breakaway doesnt work that well.

This dosent need to be said....but I'm going to say it anyway.
For every 1 good honest houndsmen. There are at least that many low life, cull's, running around with dog boxes in their trucks. And they will never change their way's. Unfortunately for the rest of us in most case's these are the hunter's recognised by the general public when forming opinions for all of us.
jrob160, I feel your pain. But what you are asking for is a very slippery slope. Look at it this way, you dont agree with how they hunt so you think it should be banned. Now I know its not that simple and you have your reasons for you opinion, but hunter's are losing out state by state. If all hunter's could stand together, strong. We could stop the anti's and take back our hunting rights, just for starters. jrob160, sorry not intending to single you out. Talked to some damn good people from Cali. yesturday. And it got my blood boiling. Thank you, John.

I wasn't trying to say this is a hounder vs trapper thing. This guy checks his traps as the law requires and usually quicker. The the point i was trying to make is that we has hound hunters need to be doing everything we can to look good to the public. Now more than ever! What happened in this case was pure and simple THEFT! It just so happened to a person that could of had an influence for houndsmen at some point in time possibly. IF IT ISNT YOURS LEAVE IT THE F@$&"K ALONE!!!!!!!! Its a pretty simple concept really

Warner5, I dont think trapping in general should be banned, I do think that taking away snares and large body traps (on the ground, not under water) would prevent alot of mishaps.
Maybe the FWP should split the quota and have different seasons and you can only participate in one? This would maybe alleviate alot of the discontent between trappers and houndsmen. Iam not wishing for trapping to shutdown, that would be a major step back for all hunters.
