training ?

Post by runnin akita »

How do I get my hound to stay at the tree? Today I went out to set my traps with a buddy and when I got to my first set I got out let the dog out and before I even had her collar on see was gone after a bob. I took off after her with my friend and the snow was up to my nuts. (wish i had brought snow shoes) after about 30 mins my buddy turned back to the truck I keep following there trail and could tell she was right behind the cat barrkin and baying. then it just stopped after a bit my buddy called me and said shes back at the truck. So I turnned back to. I think I should have followed the tracks out to see what happend but with no snow shoes I was done! But the best I can figure is that she got it treed and turned back. How do I corect this behaver?

There really is no behavior to correct. Guessing what a dog did is the worst thing you can do. With snow, you had the perfect opportunity to see exactly what happened. Training a hound is a lot of work. Don't cut corners and guess...I would have walked it out all the way, tracks tell all,,well, mostly all...lol..

If she leaves the tree odds are she will go on her back track, if ypur walking the track out you will run into her. Take her back to the tree and tie her up, encourage her to tree. She may not have the genetics for it, or hasn't matured enough depending on age.

She didnt go back on her own track, she circled around and back down the mountian. She just turned 13 months old and has only been on a few races.
