Frost bite

Post by Oldmanindeepsnow »

Three weeks ago I added frost bite to the long list of dumb things I have done.
Was wondering if any one else had done it and how bad it was also long term affects.
Blistered all 4 fingers and thumb on right hand. Thumb, ring and little finger have lost blister and are pink and tender with new skin.

wasn't hunting but back in the late 60's got a case of frost bite.. took about 15 years to get to where the spots were not sensitive to cold.
my fingers got over it quicker than my ears!

Had a hound years ago that got a front foot bitten up through the pad and broke some bones in the foot. The first time I ran him in cold weather he was out most of the day and froze the foot. The foot peeled, a really thick layer of the pad and it was always a problem after that.

Makes the bad memories come back!
Broke down up by Red Deer Alberta Canada hauling crude back to the USA, Threw a belt battery croaked, blizzard rocking,
Finally flagged down another trucker toward morning, legs turned black almost to knees, Blisters were so huge I couldn't even wear socks!
Docs wanted to whack on the pegs and toes, I said no way, stormed out and never went back other than for some antibiotics when the smell started, man that hurt!
that small tale was in the early 80s, to this day I can barely walk around much to chase hounds. Now when friends ask me to come along on a hunt they think I am a wussy when I beg off because I get embarrassed when I cant keep up.
I try to explain whats going on but until you nearly croaked like a fish stick there is no believing it! A fella gets to pay for eternity for frozen parts,
I feel for anyone who has been froze enough to get frost bite.

I frostbit my ears as a kid, then again a few years later chasing hounds in the 80's. I have permanent scars on my ears that I usually have to explain everytime I get a haircut. I about gotta wear a hoodie anytime the temperature gets below 50 degrees or my ears start aching.

I also had an 11 year old dog get frostbit on a front foot when I had to leave him out overnight on a bobcat hunt. Though he lived another 4 years, it was something he never fully recovered from. He could still hunt on warm spring days when the ground wasn't frozen, but his time as cold weather lion/bobcat dog were pretty much over after that night.

Like 2ndhound said, you pay for an eternity for frozen parts.

I had frostbite on my face, ears, and fingers several times as a youngster in those cold North Dakota and Montana winters. Feeding cattle and chopping ice in those conditions seem to be a real contributing factor.

Now in the mornings even when it is not real cold just chilly my fingers will burn like fire when I head out ot feed. IEven with gloves on it takes awhile until you get your circulation really going to break down that feeling.

My ears don't seem to bother quite as bad and no problem with my face other than I am real careful to cover it up if it's really cold. It's nothing to mess around with I had several teenage friends when i was in school whose car ran of the road in a blizzard and they tryied to walk to a farm house in city shoes and such to get help, and each lost several toes. Not a pretty sight and it can be deadly if gangreen sets in.
