Living with wolves 24/7

Post by Big Horn Posse »

If you guys think it is bad hunting in wolf territory, try living in it 24/7. Everytime I hunt on foot from my cabin the wolves come in at night and try to call my dogs out. I shot some video tonight from my bedroom window of them howling and trying to taunt my dogs to them. I keep my dogs locked up in the cabin at night and during the day they are kept close. If you have facebook you can watch the videos. Let me tell you it is eerie to hear them right outside your cabin. They are still going off as I type this!! Crazy!!

sounds like you are a prime candidate to start taking care of the problem, do you hunt or trap them? If not why not?

I have learned a lot about wolves and their behavior this last 9 months I have lived on the North Fork within 12 miles of the Park's east entrance. I have had my dogs kenneled all summer and hiked all over the backcountry and never had an issue with a wolf or even had them come into the area I had them kenneled and they were back behind the lodge aways. I do not have them kenneled this winter as I bring them inside at night now. It was in the last week the wolves have been active and moving around like crazy. I have talked to a buddy who is the large carnivor biologist for G&F and also a fellow houndsman. He said they are pairing up getting ready to breed. Last week I hiked back behind the cabin and noticed the dogs acting strange in a certain area. I went back the next morning for my hike and the wolves had come down our tracks to within 50 yards of my cabin. This is when I first heard them at night. I usually will let my hounds out during the day to have free run of the place. I have been doing this for awhile. Now I keep them within 30 yards. I have never had the wolves come in during the day and I am pretty sure they wont. They usually will come at night and howl close by as I believe to draw my dogs to them. I have hiked in a lot of other drainages on the North Fork and have noticed fresh wolf tracks in the early morning lately as well. I truely believe it is more this time of year we are going to have wolf problems with our hounds than anyother time. Like I said I have been living up here for 9 months and never had any issues with them or even seen them until now. I did buy a wolf tag this last Oct and never once seen a wolf while out hiking with the hounds. Season closes Dec 31 or when the quota is met. The quota was met prior to that. I am NOT going to poach and animal, but I will protect my dogs if the need arises. I have changed my whole style of the way I hunt my dogs to keep them protected. It might make me less successful as a lion hunter, but at least I know I can keep my dogs safe. To me I just enjoy being out with my dogs and I have passed up and pulled dogs off of lion tracks if my gut tells me it is a bad idea to let them go. That is just me. I am just curious if the majority of these hounds that have been killed over the years have been killed during this time of year? Makes you think that maybe we should be extra careful hunting our dogs during this time more than other times. I run bells on my dogs and I do not know it that helps or not, but I am willing to try anything. I am not going to move out of the country because I have to live with wolves. I am just taking every precaution I can to keep my dogs safe from them as they keep me safe from grizz when the grizz are out. Still hearing them howl all night outside the cabin is un-nerving to say the least.
