When you want to take the shocker portion of the collar off during a hunt, is this possible? Also how is the range of these units when hunting highly mountainous areas of Idaho and Montana?

Yes, When you purchase a collar, it comes with two sets of contact points as well as a plastic piece so you can run it without any shocking abilities. You still have the tone function though....

I consistantly get much further range than any of the combinations of the Astro system(220,320,DC20,DC30,DC40) while using them in the mountains of Montana. Can't promise you anything as your area is inevitably different than mine, but out here it is far superior.
