How to catch a coyote?

Post by Alberta »

Years ago my grandpa and my great uncles all had coyote hounds that were grey hounds crossed with irish wolf hounds and would run the coyotes down in the praries of southern Alberta. They would catch a couple hundred every year when the prices were high. I was wondering if the dogs you run are as fast as a grey hound or do the coyotes down there not run that far? Here in Alberta a coyote can run at warp speed for many miles and miles. I wish we could still use hounds to run them here, it is has been outlawed for years.

The dogs your referring to run strictly by sight. In the area of Wisconsin that I live it's wooded, you find a track an put a trail hound on it. Takes awhile some times to get caught up to him but that's the way we have to do it in the wooded areas

we dont run any sight dogs in our group here in Minnesota, but we do catch coyotes with the dogs we have. A few years ago when we had a lot of snow we would catch close to half of the coyotes we got up and running. Now with not much snow the coyotes have more places to hide and they can run a long ways on the crusted snow. we have one dog who is half trigg half walker and he is about 80 lbs and he will run them on sight if he gets them in the open and he does most of the catching for us!

Down here in SE Kansas we have a lot of brush and tall grasses to run in we also have some wide open areas. Some hunters run greyhounds here but we run trailhounds we do catch several coyotes but some get away some get shot when they cross the road. The dogs we use love to get 1 out of the brush into the open it may only be open for up to a half mile but they like to try and catch it if they do the fight is on we have some big hard fighting coyotes some can weigh up to 70lbs. We sometimes run 8 or 10 out of 1 mile long and 1 mile wide section its sometimes hard to trail with a lot of coyotes in the same section.

Sure don/t mean to be disrespectful, but have you weighed a coyoye that weighed 70 lbs. If I caught one here that weighed 35 that would be a large one. Are those coyotes just plain obese or are they that large framed? Respectfuly Al.

I think eastern coyotes are larger than western yotes from what I read in a article once. I am curious how many dogs these folks run on yotes, and how many hunt cats too.

Yes i have weighed them if they look and feel bigger then normal and i said up to 70 but some are smaller average weight is about 50 to 55 and no disrespect taken. We turn 4 or 5 dogs in to a section to get them jumped and then switch them out as we can to keep fresh dogs until the coyote is caught or shot we do sometimes have 8 to 10 dogs runnen at the same time and also 3 or 4 races going at the same time if runnen is good. We have a lot of prey for coyotes to eat they do kill calves around here us farmers hate them i have been hunting them my hole life my dad and my grandpa hunted my grandpas grandpa used to hunt them with horses and wagons so its been in my family for years. I have seen the coyotes around here take down a pretty good sized calf if sick a cow they are big and rough very tough and fast running and smart. As for cats we have a lot of bobcats but no big cats here we have seen a few big black cats and a few yellow/tan cats i had 1 of my really good dogs get tangled up with a big yellow/tan cat and a smaller 1 they killed him and i have seen him drowned coyotes by himself chase them down and kill them by himself so what i am saying is the cats are mean they tore him apart and were leaving before i could get to them the warden said they are not around here so i said if i kill them it doesnt matter he said i would go to jail he said they have a tracker in them [BUT THEY ARE NOT HERE] but illegal to hunt or shoot.

Kansas Hunter thanks for the reply. Interesting to learn from other houndsmen in different states. Was a long time ago that I trapped a coyote that looked very large to me weighed on a bath scale best could tell 37#. Al

Al, from what I hear eastern yotes are bigger than ones out west so a 37lb western yote would seem pretty big where I hunt a 37lber is slightly above average

No problem with info i like to here the way others hunt to. I weigh the coyotes with a set of big fish scales that hang from the ceiling in garage. If i can figure out how to post pics i will put some on here but not very good on computer. If you were closer i would tell you to come hunt with us to see it first hand how big they are around here i have people come hunt with us from a ways away all the time i reckon if wont to travel come on down be glad to have you.
